I am posting it here in case anyone missed it.

Please circulate it to all your friends please. Do you want a President who will be a laughing stock to the Chinese speaking world? Especially when his mentor and cousin LKY keeps emphasising Chinese to the point that he had to write a book on it?

For your info, many Singaporeans of Chinese ancestry especially the English educated and a Baba born in the 1940's do not speak Chinese. Just because LKY is more linguistic than others and can learn Chinese does not mean everyone can. Also, the focus was more to learning Bahasa because Singapore was part of Malaysia and there was no reason to further the Chinese language.

Most of the 1st and 2nd generation Chinese immigrants can grasp the language as their parents and themselves conversed in dialects at home. There were more Chinese language schools during that period too. The Babas usually speak English and Malay patois at home.

It's very obvious that he was reading the Hanyu script in front of him.

It appears TS wants that to be one of the requirements.

We are fully aware of the existence of many non-Mandarin speaking Chinese from that era. However, they should be honest enough to admit and accept the fact that they can't speak Mandarin. We would prefer them to ask someone else to dub the speech instead of pretending to be able to converse in Mandarin. TCB did not speak in Mandarin and no one is complaining.

TT's supporters will argue that it is a show of sincerity as great effort has been put in although that speech is short and simple. Ironically most Mandarin speaking people wouldn't think so. Most see it as an attempt to bluff (pretending that he knows Mandarin), to buy vote. The speech left them feeling digusted - hearing a Chinese speaking in that way. So whoever recommended that he should make that speech in Mandarin personally has made a terrible mistake. Maybe, "Don't open your mouth and let others think that you are fool then open it and remove all doubts" is more aptly applied to such speeches.

You will be surprised as to how many young and new Singaporeans really know about our heritage and about our past beyond certain rudimentary knowledge gained either from school or visits to the museum.

This is not true. You have put words in my mouth.

I did not say that Chinese ability is a MUST for a President. After all, Nathan cannot even speak chinese period.

However, if you can't speak Chinese, please don't try to appear as though you can. Tan Cheng Bock got his speech dubbed by a professional translator and no one said anything. If you can't do something, have the humility to admit that you can't do it and don't try to act smart!!

Tan Jee Say did not impress with his Chinese speech either but Tony Tan's "performance" saved TJS's blushes. Tony should have just done what Cheng Bock did and hired a professional translator. Then people can't even have grounds to laugh at him.

He looked so petrified and uncomfortable.. I bet many aunties and uncles could not even make out WTF he was trying to say..

Ok bro...sorry if I got that impression.

Not just on the Mandarin speech, the line up of elite assentors on stage on Nomination Day with him together with his son as observed by Yawning Bread
was a big blunder. So was the original campaign message that he will be the saviour of Singapore when Financial Armageddon descends. Not clarifying the privileged status his son enjoyed in serving his NS obligations was yet another....
