Here in Phnom Penh, where I live, duck eggs are as common as chicken. I find the yolk richer but had it only once or twice. Just costs 500 riel each, USD0.12.

'Bong tier kong', literally translated as egg duck baby, or balut in Philippines, is a common snack sold by street vendors on bicycles, playing a recorded tune as they ply the streets. Comes with a salt, pepper and lime juice condiment. Reputed to give one that extra oomph! to your libido. Me? Tried it twice to a challenge by the girls in the bar, it actually tastes quite savoury once you get past the visual.

I suppose you're right but duck eggs are nearly always used for balut, haven't come across any other than ducks'. Cheers. I think ducks' are preferred because it's slightly bigger, and cheaper because it's not as in demand as chickens. Same reason for salted and century eggs.

Ok, i didnt know that, thanks for clarifying.
How come nobody answer why duck egg not allowed here? since the bird flu incident right?

Not sure is related to bird flu or not very hard to find duck egg.
Most duck egg use for salted egg. That we see in the moon cake.
Maybe due to less consumer demand for fresh duck egg that why no people import. Also duck egg is more expensive if scale it on the weight eg. per kilo duck egg will be nearly double the price of chicken egg.
Duck hard to rear because not use to be cage like the chicken farm egg. Duck normally need big space to roam around also a pond for them to clean up.

All my life I thought duck eggs are only salted eggs and century eggs until I came to Bangkok I found out that Thais eat duck eggs just like chicken eggs. I mean they will fry it steam it in all sorts of style. I tried and kind of like it as it is richer and tastier. SO now I also stock up duck eggs in the fridge.

Fresh duck eggs are sold side by side with chicken eggs but more expensive. 10 chicken eggs costs 37-44 baht in the market while duck eggs are like 55 baht for 10.
