Imagine 10 years ago. We would still be in the orbit of Singapore Press Holdings and at the mercy of the PAP government. Nearly every week there seems to be a buzz about a establishment figure for various indiscretions, cover-ups and unanswered questions or evasive answers.

Here is a short bits of these which would not surfaced in the state controlled press:
1. Penny low answering her SMS
2. Penny Low telling lies in a condescending tone
3. Tony Tan's son and his 7 months NS stint
4. Rachelle and Joachim Gay saga on the back of Penny Low
5. Unfavour press coverage of TT as raised in the social media
6. Shanmugam' Re-clarification on his clarification
7. Indians can't cook curry in their home as mediated by Shanmugam's ministry

God only knows how many other abuses have been coved by Singapor Press Holdings and it's prostitutes.

I have made this little observation after the GE, the social media in the form of TRE/FB/TOC have made PAP very reactionary and their reaction has been clumsy and clownish. This is the first time since 1959 that they have faced so much negativity from the very people they sought to brainwash with their propaganda. Clearly they have underestimated the power of the social media and their Internet Brigade is failing badly. This coming from a once progressive looking political party that cannot see one step in front of them in the cyber landscape. Most Pathetic

Pathetic is indeed the word. Forummer Kingrant first highlighted the reactionary mode the PAP in recent times and it seems the mode that they are comfortable with. Or more importantly, they a lost. Your point about the once progressive party is spot on and the word "once" is the operating word. I have been watching since the GE came to an end and there is no change and no desire to change. In fact the Tony Tan long running campaigns helped by current and past SPH and MediaCorp journalists is a disgrace. No decent and well qualified candidate can overcome these kinds of obstacles. I have no idea the old man's son even bothered to apologise during the GE.

You noticed that Gerard Ee is taking a damn long time to arrive at the recommended wages for the PM and his Ministers. The request to increase the Transport Fares came after his appointment and the decision for that is over. Yet, the eagerly awaited announcement regarding their pay has been put on the backburner as though it was not a priority.

Indeed pathetic. Methinks they are treading blind, and deaf or chose to. Their gut instincts (cultivated by Old Man's era) is not to take the social media and Internet noise seriously, but they also know that they cannot afford to avoid or disregard it anymore. They used to be even more brazen - recall idiots like Lim Swee Say who aped none other than Old Man when he said they have to be deaf frogs in order to carry on doing what THEY FEEL is right. Until the GE2011 brought them crashing to the ground, hard.

But post GE, instinctively, they want to listen to the social media for want of recovering lost ground, but at the same time, their sense of intellectual pride and know-it-all worldly wisdom is telling them to ignore the social media. Hence they are truly lost and suffering from the psychosis of a schizophrenia.

Here is where SPH has lost its legitimacy to inform and educate (both sides of the line in the sand.) I would say the Old Man had been too successful he killed his own propaganda machine.

Not only that, he was recently removed as Chairman of Tiger Airways over the Australian grounding of the fleet. He has to realise that he has been made use of by the PAP. His father was alot stronger than him.

If the salary review does not come close to what the public expects, he will be totally discredited.

The PAP's policies are the root cause of our discontent and hardship. (not to take credit away - they have done well in most economic policies). Take population. This has vital strategic consequences. Their policies have made it difficult and costly to bring up children and instead of helping Singaporeans do that, they short cut by importing. We built this country in the early decades without their lemming-like approach to immigration and we can still do it. Foreign talent is fine as long as they are not hooligans disguised as options traders who get drunk and beat up our taxi drivers. And get away with just a fine because they are white.

This government loves bragging rights. So why can't we give free textbooks to school children up to say, O Levels, cap student transport at 50 cents for MRT and 20 cents for buses regardless of distance, edusave for all kids even if you have 10 children. Make it less costly for Singaporeans to raise kids. This isn't welfare where you simply give money away; it is subsidizing for a greater good. Isn't that what they always preach? For the greater good? The PAP must stop reacting and start giving, stop calculating and put the "People" back into the People's Action Party. We have the money. We have GST. We have very good civil servants who know where the money can be found to do this.

Motherhood statements and apologies will no longer win them votes. First they have to win back our trust with deeds.

The social media is a write-off the PAP, no thanks to the incessant and condescending manner of the way the SPH has been reporting the "news" - they might as well rename it the PAP Daily "News"Letter. Letters unfavourable to the party or government are ignored.

They don't get it (as usual) that in communications and reaching out to the people, it is the CONTENTS and not just the AVENUE. Just as they claimed that Rin Tin Tin was drafted in to reach out to the young. What happened? The young could not take to her. Arrival of Nicole Seah debunked their earlier contention that the fury Tin Tin attracted was her age and gender. (According to the now departed Lim Hwee Hwa). Arrival of Nicole Seah debunked all that crap.

Then they featured Tin Tin in the Brothel Press that she was good at reaching out to the old in McPherson. And when THAT did not work, they showed her inspecting drains. These lies of self-deception are not unknown to them. Which is why Wooden Goh was the guest of honour at the recent National Day celebrations in McPherson, with Tin Tin playing the supporting role of a favoured daughter, running around like a school girl and getting her "father's" approval.

I was watching the news last night and saw GCT highlighted that it was worrying to see netizens through social media lambasted policies and issues that might become a growing permanent trend.

It's no longer a trend. It's the way of living under the PAP's rule.
People are getting frustrated and angrier each day and banging the keyboard is a temporary relief.

Dun think he is worried about lambasting policies by people/netizen/lunatics fringe/whatever. It is the inability of the Government to "control" the social media that worries him. It is a fact that they cannot just issue a clarification/statement and move on, like what they have been doing with MSM.

The social media is simply performing the sort of investigative journalism that SPH journalists should have been doing over the last 5 decades.

Had the journalists not been muzzled all these years, politicians would be a lot more adept at handling the social media onslaught.

As you can see, it's not just sinkies peasants that have been mollycoddled. The govt has led an even more sheltered life. What they need is a bit of foreign competition and some spurs dug into their sides.

I remember back in 2009 there was a big outcry in cyberspace about TH's losses and investments in failed banks whose equity has collapsed in the wake of the financial crisis. The funny thing is how on earth did people like us ever got to know TH or GIC invested in those banks. Turns out they were forced to report it because foreign media had reported it.

And how did foreign media get to know about those investments and divestments? TH invested and divested Merrill Lynch (under BoA) and under SEC rules they were forced to make a declaration of their holdings. This applies if they had bought a sizeable chunk of the company which they had done so. If you left it up to ST to do the reporting nothing would have been said. Essentially the blogosphere and cyberspace, just like foreign media, is forcing SPH's hand in reporting things they will not otherwise report. If they still did nothing even though other sources reported them, they'll end up being seen as nothing more censored state media.

On the other hand this also means that if TH and GIC did dirty unreported dealings with closed regimes where free media and disclosure laws are non-existent, no one will know anything about it.

Dear Friends,

I agree that the social media has improved the information being circulated and more news is being made known to the public. Looking at the role social media has played in the recent GE, it has shown how much the PAP is dysfunctional. Their bad policies, FTs, LHL's so called 'apology' TPL etc.

However despite all this, PAP still got 60% of the vote. What made it worse (in my opinion) is LHL has gotten a bigger vote share than in the previous election. Lets face it, he is a bad prime minister, you dont see him much, where was he in the Mas Selamat case? Where is he now? what has he done for singaporeans? Name me his policies that the people will say good..

And look at West Coast GRC, being run by clowns like Lim Hng Kiang and Cedric Foo...they did well in the last election.

The social media is good, and PAP is at a lost on how to deal with it, but maybe they can still remain at a lost as they have majority support despite their attempt to make like harder for Singaporeans. Singaporeans like them and like getting screwed.

I hope that for this PE, things will be different and TT will loose, but its hard as its a 4 corner fight and PAP supporters ie that 60% will support the PAP candidate. TT is responsible for the mess singaporeans face, and his reward will be the presidency.. thanks 60%

there's a dinstinct difference here. journalists are paid pawns while social media are just voluntary and personal. the formal has a gov propaganda to mission on while the latter has a personal vendetta.

we need to start planting bugs in T.C.H's lumbering backyard :p:p:p
