My nephew wish to be a freelance computer designer doing design for posters & internet websites. I am not from this industry thus I cannot comment. He is going to ROD soon. 1 year 10 months of NS only these days, unbelivable.

From observations and the rants I read on the internet, there seem to be au unfair competition from foreign 'talent' in this sector. I do not wish to discourage my nephew however.

Anyone from the sector care to shed some light?

t/kasih!

If he's any good, he can post his resume on elance and the money will soon be flowing in.

I've spent a fair sum on elance. A competent specialist can easily earn $100,000 a year. A few good testimonials is all it takes to get things going.

National borders don't come into the equation in this day and age. Elance is truly international. You compete with the rest of the world but that's your potential market too. Nothing can be fairer.

The guy I've hired twice is in Nicaragua. I don't know what he looks like. I don't know what he sounds like but he does a very good job in his area of expertise.

Elance has an excellent escrow system which prevents rip offs. Payment is via paypal.

No wonder

Nothing to do with this forum. The problems with this forum are because I try to do things myself.;) However, I assure you I'm getting better with time.

I use elance for graphic and logo design work. One has to be gay in order to be good at it. I don't even bother trying.

dun try giving excuses ... u r oni as gd as ur lousy avatar ...

Freelancing can be good if flexible working hours, exposure and learning opportunities are what your nephew's looking for. It's best that he has prior experience with dealing with clients. Selling, negotiations and PM can be a distraction to billable "real work". If possible, pick clients that are based in US, Europe or Australia. They are more professional when dealing with FLs.

Freelance computer designer? I am assuming you are referring to graphics designer. The job pays low and the hours are long. I should know. I worked with some graphic designers and spoke to them. The ones making money are the bosses (which is the case everywhere) and they are just slaves churning out work after work.
