4 elderly women fall off 'faulty' escalator
But mall's management staff say incident is 'normal' and just 'a big hoo-ha'

FOUR elderly women suffered deep cuts, fractures and bruises at Punggol Plaza yesterday morning when the handrail of the escalator they were on suddenly stopped moving.

The women, in their 70s and 80s, were just three steps from the top. As they were clutching on to the handrails, they lost their balance and fell backwards.

Four women in their 70s and 80s were badly hurt yesterday after tumbling down an escalator at Punggol Plaza.

According to a report in The Straits Times, the four women were three steps from the top of the escalator when the handrails they were holding on to suddenly stopped. They lost their balance and tumbled one on top of another before landing in a painful heap at the bottom of the escalator.

The woman at the back of the group, Mdm Kiong Mok Lan, 76, suffered the worst injuries after failing to stop the fall of those above her. Mdm Kiong landed face down and fractured her left cheekbone, right hand and left leg. Her left eye is now bruised and swollen, her spectacles were also broken in the fall.

All four women have since been discharged from the hospital.

The women are now very angry at Punggol Plaza’s response to the accident. One of the women, Mdm Hoh, 72, said that a mall management officer told her the accident happened because the women are old and had become giddy and fallen. Mdm Hoh’s son-in-law, Andy Lim, 46 feels that the mall management is very irresponsible to dismiss the incident as a minor one.

When contacted, mall management officers told reporters that what happened is “normal” and is just “a big hoo-ha”. Another mall employee said the mall had never received feedback that the escalator is faulty, despite nearby shop owners saying that incidents are common on the problematic escalator.

"A Punggol Plaza management staff told Yahoo! Singapore that the escalators were cordoned off and checks were conducted after the incident by their elevator servicing company, which showed that the escalators were not faulty as reported by the local media."
