Dr Tan Cheng Bock shared how he stood up against powerful union leaders to get back the $14,000 of benevolent fund inherited from his father who had just passed away. He went to see the judge and lawyers and successfully got back what was due to him after many struggles. He finally bought the first family fridge for his mother at the age of 16 afte getting back what was rightfully his.

Barisan were controlling the unions at that time. The PAP were beholden to them to get mainstream support. Government agencies such as Legal Aid could not move.

With the split, agencies could move in.

By the way Jarmit Singh went to prison for playing around with Harbour Board Union Funds. Imagine these unions were pushing a fatherless 16 year old boy.

Before the split, the govt was afraid to touch them as they were in the same team as the boss. Once they are separate, there's no more such considerations and it became "open season" (especially they are now the enemies).

He said he knew the opportunity came when the party splitted. I must say as a 16 year old kid, he was rather mature to know the political power struggle then and its implication on the complex relationships between union and govt agencies. No wonder there is a common saying that people grow up and mature fast during difficult times.
