I don't understand what is with all this postulating about who will be the next president or who will run for president. Names like Chiam, Leong, Tan KL, George Yeo, etc. have been bandied around. The next president of SIngapore has already been decided in the PAP back office. I am totally amazed people don't understand this. Whether Nathan wants to stay or not, is not up to him. The PAP CEC will decide that. I know they are not supposed to have anything to do with it, but the fact of the matter is, they do. The entire Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) is populated by PAP appointees, CEC members, and they will decide who is qualified to run and who is not. Reading the members of the PEC is like looking at a list of PAP elites and insiders. This will not be an impartial process. This time, expect them to approve two candidates instead of one like the last time. This will be for show only. One candidate will be a strong PAP annointed well known person. The other candidate will be less well known and obviously less qualified, so as to give the impression there is genuine competition in this process. Both will be well known to owe their allegiance to the PAP. ANy other person who files papers to join the elections, especially if they are oppo leaders or people who speak against the system, will be found to be "unqualified" after an "extensive" investigation by the PEC. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

Well, after the last election PAPies become a bad brand name and perhaps this time they shd thick twice of conning the people. If PAP want to win the next election they shd come clean with the people with the P election.

I think otherwise. The rules are designed to allow candidates favoured by the ruling party to contest. Probably any candidate that surface will be linked in one way or another. Nonetheless, not everyone linked are beholden to the ruling party. As long as they have no weaknesses that can be exploited, or their future livelihood or their business interest won't be hurt, then they will not be controlled.

My preferred candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock is a professional medical doctor with high standing with his patients. Whatever the outcome of the elections, his patients will continue to be there. Fortunately for him, his non-executive Chairman role in Chuan Hup allows him the opportunity to compete. I doubt very much that the PEC has any solid grounds to disqualify him from this election.

The tall one with the 110% EQ and one term CEO of now defunct OUB Bank may be one of the two if what you say is correct. With his stature and mannerism he certainly looks Presidential. But pity that his surname isn't.

Ok... agree... may i know who they are?

I agree - Very hard to disqualify someone like TCB or TKL. I think GY stand a higher chance of being disqualified because the intent of the EP is to be independent of any political party. GY was a cabinet minister and running under PAP barely a month back so he cannot be deemed as independent.

since all that he is gonna do is to wave his hand during NDP, better elect a handsome guy...so i will just vote for anyone who looks good on camera.

and I don't mind as well, a day off for election hee...

Well, certainly can't dispute your line of thought as we all vote for differing reasons. I would add that we should then look at the first couple i.e., both husband and wife, if our decision is based on looks more than anything else. After all, their portraits will be adorning our schools and offices for the next 5 years, better to have a photo that calms you down.

Based on this criteria, Dr Tan and his wife Cecilia fits the bill.

actually, as in one of my post, i wonder why we need to have their photos staring down at us? What is the purpose?

My guess is that the President is the personification of the country, to put a human face to the Singapore nationhood.

Oh wise one, please share your wisdom.

I guess I do have to spell it out to you and to all the other morons out there. People like u who have this high idea of the office of the president of singapore with ""personification of the country, to put a human face on the singapore nationhood" or that the presidential couple should be asthetically pleasing need to have their head examine.

The notion that the President's main job is to guard the national reserves is a joke. This power is seldom used and than used only under the most dire circumstances. The REAL power of the Presidency lies in its every day mundane functions. For example, the President signs acts into law. These acts have been voted on and passed by Parliament and with the President's signature, they become law. Do you seriously think the PEC will allow anyone other than a true blue PAP lackey to become the President? Can you imagine if some one like Tan Kim Lian becomes a president? He will question every bill presented before him and withhold his signature on the ones he does not like. (A job that a really independent President should be doing). If tan Kim Lian was the president, he would not have put his signature to any law paying the Minister $4 million a year in salary. The PAP will know this, hence The PEC will choose some one whose loyalty to the PAP is unquestioned even if they are butt ugly like Nathan.

Thank you for your reply. However, we were discussing about the Portraits of the President and the First Lady and its symbolism, not so much on the post of the EP.

Would appreciate your wisdom on this specific point.
