I think the old guards and Gay Loong are really at their wits end. The last GE was a close shave for them. They are bankrupt of ideas and outwitted and out manuerved at every turn by the oppos and by other countries competing for a larger share of the economic pie. Its obvious that they acknowledge Tharm as their intellectual superior when it comes to the field of finance and economics. He actually has somewhat of a track record, and is a smart cookie. I am astounded by the number of important portfolios given to Tharm, i.e. MOM, MOF. I was puzzled by why he was also in the PMO. Now it all makes sense to me. He is now the defacto PM. He has been given carte blanche to pull the ship out of the storm. That is why he is in the PMO, as he has to oversee the other ministries when they report to the PM. That is why he can demand his personnel like Heng to be send over from MAS to the cabinet. He is putting in place the people that he trusts. Gay Loong has always struck me as the reluctant PM, placed there by a domineering father and mother. I know of not one original idea he had or one initiative that he put in place that would make people say "yes, that's the way to go". If his father was not who he is, Gay Loong's political career would have suffered a fatal blow just by his wife's fuck ups and lost of billions $. Its hard to sit in the cabinet and look across the table at people like tharm, knowing you wife just cost the govt. billions. I think at this point, he has given the lead to Tharm to be the economic czar and let him have a go at it. In truth, I feel much better if it was tharm running the real show, than Gay Loong.

Tharman is one of the best Ministers Singapore can have. Lucky for PAP have him. If not PAP popularity will be less than 60%.

If Tharman going to take over,we are going down the road of the South Asian standard of living.These people are only good in "speak to impress" but without substance.

Tharm is intellectually smart, and he gets it, but the real reason I think is that he has the trust of the lee family. As MOF he protected them when they screw up the Temasek and GIC investments.

I think Tharm should have been born a Lee. he would have made a much better PM than Gay Loong. Although intellectually smart, he knows better than to bite the hand that is feeding him, hence his loyalty to the Lee factors into all his power now. Just being smart by itself is not good enough in PAP politics to help u, but he protected the Lee's backside when Temasek and GIC were losing money from their investments. Imagine u are the Minister of Finance and your ministry owns a ltd company that the ministry has poured $billions into for investment purposes. Than imagine that this company loses $billions of the ministry's money thru bad investments, kenna conned by Thaksin, John Thain, etc. But yet, as Minister in charge of this company, u do not order a full audit and investigation into these losses. In fact, u don't even fire anyone in the company. And that company happens to be run by your boss's wife. That is called protecting your boss's and his family's backside. That is why Gay Loong trusts him so much that he can give him 3 portfolios and in effect, tell him that he is the captain of the ship now.

Tharman is IMFC Chiarman, in a powerful position to wreck or cure global giants. But he'll never become PM. Not with Lees and Li around.

That is why I say he is defacto, not PM in name. But who knows? If Gay Loong's cancer relapses, Tharm will have to be seat warmer for Li Hongyi until he is ready, just like Wooden seat warmed for gay Loong.

That is why I say he is defacto, not PM in name. But who knows? If Gay Loong's cancer relapses, Tharm will have to be seat warmer for Li Hongyi until he is ready, just like Wooden seat warmed for gay Loong.

Hongyi is highly unlikely to enter politics--doesnt have the cut. IMFC Chairman is also just honorary, IMF is always bigger than Tharman.

When u are aLee, u don't need an MPA. That is just for show. If he wasn't Old GOat's son, Harvard would never have taken a SAF general into this program.
