Unable to overcome the shock and grief of a break-up with her boyfriend, a 26-year-old woman sat on a ledge on the sixth floor and threatened to jump down the building.
She was clad only in her undergarments and was wielding a knife. The tense situation lasted for about an hour before she was rescued by SCDF personnel and thereafter arrested by the police.
The incident occurred yesterday at about 4:40pm in a unit on the 6th floor at Woodlands Drive 14, Block 525.
The 26-year-old woman, surnamed Song, works as a salesperson and lives with her mother in the unit. Her father is believed to have divorced her mother more than 10 years ago.
The frail-looking Song was wearing a thin white T-shirt and blue panties as she sat on the window ledge with her legs hanging out, in full view of a nervous crowd of onlookers.
It is understood that the lady returned to her room for a cigarette when the SCDF and Police arrived at the scene, and thereafter returned to the windowsill where she sat and smoked.
The Civil Defence personnel set up an air cushion quickly while Police personnel tried to talk her out of suicide.
She held a fruit knife to her throat for 10 minutes; she had also fasted for 2 weeks; her father received her “farewell” call.
