A Gurkha who single-handedly fought off an attack by at least a dozen Taliban insurgents has been awarded Britain's second highest medal for bravery.

Acting Sergeant Dipprasad Pun used up all of his ammunition and resorted to using his machine gun tripod to repel the attack in Afghanistan in September.

The Gurkha, 31, of Ashford, Kent, said he was a "lucky guy" and very proud to get the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

A total of 136 UK servicemen and women are being honoured, four posthumously.

On the roof
Acting Sgt Pun was on sentry duty at a checkpoint near Babaji, in Afghanistan's Helmand province, on 17 September last year when he spotted insurgents trying to plant a bomb beside the front gate.

Moments later, militants opened fire on the compound from all sides.

For more than a quarter of an hour, alone on the roof, Acting Sgt Pun fought off an onslaught from rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s.

In total, he fired more than 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine.

At one point, when an insurgent tried to climb up to his position, his rifle failed and he resorted to throwing his machine gun tripod to knock him down.

Acting Sgt Pun, who is originally from the Nepalese village of Bima, believed at the time that there were more than 30 attackers.

Local villagers later told him the figure was more likely to have been 12 to 15.

Recalling the incident, he said: "As soon as it was confirmed [they were] Taliban, I was really scared.

They have battle experience thru online games...

Unles and until they fight in a real war with bullets and bombs flying, they shall always remain paper generals! On paper, they look handsome and fearsome with their 1/2/3 stars! And don't they love their jobs with high salaries and perks.

Army general to learn ropes from SM Goh
Ong Seh Hong making way for newcomer in Marine Parade GRC
By Teo Wan Gek

SENIOR Minister Goh Chok Tong has got his wish for a strong candidate to understudy and succeed him in helming the Marine Parade GRC team one day.

He said in a post on the People's Action Party Marine Parade branch's Facebook page, MParader, yesterday that one of the two former military top brass will be a new candidate in his GRC.

The duo are outgoing army chief Major-General Chan Chun Sing, 41, and Brigadier-General Tan Chuan Jin, 42.

SM Goh also confirmed that Dr Ong Seh Hong will retire from politics. The post read: 'The good-hearted doctor is selflessly stepping down from Ubi for one of the two generals to understudy me.'

The Straits Times had earlier reported that the likely new candidate is BG Tan and that he will be introduced to residents this weekend.

SM Goh wrote in a Facebook post last Saturday that he asked Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to send him a 'strong candidate who has the potential to be part of the fourth-generation core team'.

The duo, who have not been seen on the ground yet, have been tipped to be future office-holders after they hang up their army greens for PAP whites.

SM Goh's post is also an affirmation that one of them will enter politics.

BG Tan stepped down as commander of the Army Training and Doctrine Command last Friday. The Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship recipient will leave the SAF on March 31 after 24 years of service.

In an e-mailed reply last night responding to questions from The Straits Times, BG Tan said he understood 'the interest and speculation. I would be curious too!'

He added: 'Even though the final details of my next steps are being firmed up, it appears that I may well have the honour of continuing to (serve), albeit in a different capacity.'

'To be involved in the grassroots allows us to directly know our people's needs and concerns, and to make what difference we can. I believe it is also about bringing people together to build strong communities,' he said, in an indication that politics could be on the cards.

'There is much that I have to learn from those who have tirelessly served the community and I hope that I can contribute, in my own small way, to the good work done by those who have walked the path before me.'

Maj-Gen Chan, who joined the SAF in December 1987, stepped down as army chief last Friday after holding the post for a year. But the President and SAF Overseas Scholarship recipient has remained tight-lipped about his plans.

With the addition of one of the former generals, the PAP line-up in Marine Parade GRC has started to take shape.

With Dr Ong's impending retirement, the current team is made up of SM Goh, Dr Fatimah Lateef, Mr Seah Kian Peng, Mr Lim Biow Chuan and Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim.

But Mr Lim's Mountbatten ward has been carved out as a single seat following changes to the electoral boundaries.

Also, Dr Faishal's Kaki Bukit ward has been absorbed by Aljunied GRC and he is likely to move to Nee Soon GRC.

This would leave SM Goh, Dr Fatimah and Mr Seah from the original line-up.

But the new Marine Parade GRC has shrunk from a six-MP to a five-MP GRC and now includes single-seat MacPherson, helmed by Mr Matthias Yao.

Ms Tin Pei Ling, 27, has been understudying Mr Yao. And the prospective entry of BG Tan will round off the five-MP team.

How about volunteering to fight in agfanistan and see whether you are back alive to lead to country into the future.

To have a strong army is to deter war not to fight war.
The USA army has many war generals who are war veterans but that doesnt stop them for going to war and in doing so incurring trillions in debts. How many innocent americans had to die because of George Bush.

Other countries' army and police have proper ranking system, e.g. a corporal or sergeant needs some years of field experience before attaining their ranks. Singapore ranks are two-a-penny. I just heard nowadays there're no more police constables, regular recruits pass out of Home Academy as police corporals. Inspectors used to be big shots. Now throw a coin in a police station, you're more likely to hit an ASP.

In US police, a sergeant is already a big deal, and usually middle-aged already. Don't worry for them about slow rank promotion, their salaries are very high and keeping up with year-to-year inflation. There're not ego-rank crazy. Singapore sergeants, whether army or police, nowadays look like schoolboy NCC/NPCC.

Your info outdated already. In the late 90s to probably 2003, the joke was when in a seminar, throw a stone sure hit ASP. Easier to hit DSP compared to Insp.

Today, the stone will very likely hit a DSP. Also, easier to hit a Supt than an Insp.

In the past, SI rank very very well respected. Especially DSIs. Today? The SIs and SSIs are like the Sgts of the past. They are all scared die types. Give credit when it is due - cops today less likely to be corrupted than the past. They don't become weekend runners, visit gambling dens, KTVs, fuck shops etc. All very decent. But when something happens, no kang tao, no intelligence.

My time DSI was duke of the town, the most under-educated brute who's ready to bash or shoot anyone, and with an army of detectives that looked like mafia hitmen behind him. Many criminals, gangsters and drug addicts found out the hard and painful way. I saw with my eyes as lockup SC, I had to do escort to interrogation room too. Sometimes the DSI asked me how to spell this word or that word.  The AIOs and IOs are more educated, no such silly kindergarten spelling question occured before.

That's right. The DSIs as I recall used to report to work smartly attired. Sure to have a Rolex on the wrist! They speak alright but come to spelling, jialak one. This is the same for the DSIs in CID. They were feared inside and outside police stations.

All these DSIs were well-known for one reason or another. They struck fear in the criminals. Very different now. No DSI. Intel branch takes over the role. They are no even 10% capable of what the DSI and his team were in the past. But, SIs today no problem with spelling.

Yes, wore Rolex, shirts and long pants like just ironed half an hour ago, permed, chromed and styled hair. Always looking like going to attend some wedding dinner. The hokkien bengs called him ampaitao. Mentioning his name really struck fear.

No more DSI now? No wonder the gangs are getting rampant again.

Ampaitaos 'dieded' at least a decade ago when ampais were posted to become investigators and some to div intel branch. The balance formed the Crime Control Unit. Effectiveness of this unit very minimal. Their role, status and importance were cremated the day ampais went out of fashion.

Converted ampais to IOs had lots of problems then. Their ampai and IO roles greatly differs. IOs were supposed to be ampais too. How to? THat's the failure of their system. I mean, if CPs and his top officers could not even handle the hardcore criminals when they were younger and in earlier postings, how do you expect their subordinates to?

Yes, detectives and investigators are different roles. How did WKS manage to screw up things like that?
