Ask around and you discover that 90% o Singaporeans are unhappy due to one of the 5 top reasons:
1. Housing prices too high cannot afford better housing like bigger flats and landed property.
2. Transport cost too high especially car which is controled by COE. Many people with family cannot own car.
3. No more jobs security. Those above 40 very fearful - owe lots of money to bank + family to support but easily retrenched and hard to find job.
4.Too many foreigners. Too overcrowded. Too competitive.
5. Healthcare becoming unaffordable.
Unhappiness among Singaporeans is caused by UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS.
Singapore is now a developed country so life cannot be so easy and laid back compared with before. For example, Johor and Penang people easily afford landed property and car. However, because Singapore is an advanced country, you cannot expect to get your basic needs satisfied so easily like the people of Johor and Penang. In a developed country and crowded most people have to squeezed onto public transport and live in small flats. So it is wrong for people to have mindset of those in places like Johor and Penang to expect basic needs to be met easily. You cannot set your expectations as high as that of people such as Johor and Penang for car and landed property/condo.
For job security, Singaporeans cannot expect stability in a highly economically dynamic country. They must be willing to be retrianed for whatever the economy needs - one day it is IT, next it is selling insurance/structured products next it is gaming industry. Where-ever govt find ways to grow GDP, Singaporeans must adapt to support govt. Unlike certain places where people have stable jobs in stagnant economies, we are a dynamic economy that must change directions to catch the next wind to grow the GDP. The only place with job security is civil service or become PAP MP/Minister even if serve a few years can collect a few million. But for the rest of Singaporeasns learn to accept low pay and be able to retrain and change like a chemeleon.
As for high stress and foreigners, Singaporeans cannot expect to lead the life that people in lower developed countries lead, we are an advanced country so stress is high and will go higher.
Singaporeans cannot have the mindset of people in developing countries (places such as Penang & Johor) and expect quality of living because we are a developed country. Your needs are not so easily fulfiled, life is more stressful and your quality of living cannot be as good. If you want affordable medical care, you have to go to Malaysia or Thailand where people have affordable medical care. If you want to live in a bigger home or drive a car, remember it is just not possible to meet everyone's expectation on this.
