Out now: Mah's book on housing

A BOOK featuring commentaries written by National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan was officially released yesterday.

The book, called Reflections On Housing A Nation, includes Mr Mah's thoughts on public housing and provides readers with an insight into the rationale, principles and considerations behind important public housing issues.

For example, in one piece, he addresses the Government's response to the rising aspirations of Singaporeans.

'People ask me, 'Why doesn't HDB stick to providing basic housing?'' Mr Mah wrote. 'The answer is simple: Our people have changed and they no longer want only basic housing.'

The nine commentaries in the 88-page book, which also features numerous photographs, were first published in the Today newspaper from September to December last year.

Mr Mah said in a statement yesterday: 'I hope to reach out to more Singaporeans, to tell them about our ongoing housing story, and to enhance their understanding of the policy considerations behind this success story.'

A total of 8,000 copies of the book have been printed, in both English and Chinese. Most of the books will be distributed for free over the next few weeks at places such as HDB branch offices, public libraries and schools.
