Man faces 85 charges

<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh

IN LESS than three hours, a production engineer managed to shoot 85 upskirt videos of unsuspecting women two years ago. Tham Nam Sang, 47, was charged on Tuesday with 85 counts of intruding into the privacy of his victims. His lawyer asked the court for an adjournment to take further instructions and to arrange for a psychiatric assessment for Tham.

The production engineer looked worried and was fidgety and left the courtroom immediately after the hearing.
Lawyers told The Straits Times that this is very likely the most number of charges ever slapped on an upskirt suspect. According to court documents, Tham is said to have placed a digital camera in a plastic bag with the lens pointing up to film videos of the undergarments worn by his victims.

Between 5.10 pm and 7.30 pm on Sept 6, 2008, he is believed to have visited the Suntec City convention centre, Ngee Ann City shopping centre as well as several other unknown locations. By approaching women in short skirts and placing his bag near their legs, he is said to have filmed their undergarments. The court was not told if the videos were of 85 different women or if some of the videos were of the same victim

SINGAPORE: A production engineer has pleaded guilty to five charges of insulting the modesty of women by taking underskirt videos of them without their knowledge.

47-year-old Tham Nam Sang pleaded guilty to five charges while the remaining 80 will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

He recorded all 85 videos on September 6 2008. Most of them were taken at Ngee Ann City.

Based on a report from the Institute of Mental Health, Tham was suffering from major depressive disorder when he recorded the images.

District Judge Soh Tze Bian has called for a probation report and Tham will be back in court on April 28.

For insulting the women's modesty, Tham could be jailed up to a year and fined for each charge.

A PRODUCTION engineer used a digital camera hidden in a paper bag to video the underskirts of women in shopping malls on one day in 2008.

Within two hours on Sept 6, 2008, Tham Nam Sang managed to capture clips of 85 unsuspecting women, mostly in Ngee Ann Shopping Centre, Suntec Convention Centre and other unknown places.

On Friday, the 47-year-old admitted to five counts of intruding into the privacy of women.

His lawyer, Mr Jacob Lim, told Community Court Judge Soh Tze Bian that Tham was having mental depression at the time and was still undergoing treatment.

He said this was his client's first brush with the law and there was very little risk of him offending again.

The court called for a probation report on April 28.

The maximum punishment for insulting modesty is one year's jail and a fine.

I hope he gets what he deserves for disrespecting our women.

Some more using mental depression as an excuse. If he really has mental depression, howcome he has this urge to match the upskirt videos with the victim's face pictures as stated in the reports.

Cheers.

Cheers.
