Credits to Deng for being more open-minded even though as you said, it is a no-brainer. If it is someone who is like-minded like Mao, I doubt it will ever materialize. Deng injected the nation back to life and his policies are the reason why China is not in the same state as Africa. Same reason why China is having economic growth now, thanks to his groundwork.

Mao Zedong's portrait should have been torn down from the Square and replaced with Deng Xiaoping.

He probably felt disillusioned about communism once his son was thrown out of a window and paralyzed. But there is only one party in China, so there is no such thing as defect.

He had no choice anyway, if he choose not to reform, he know China will end up the same state as Africa. Big land but slums everywhere.

He hated Mao and the Gang of Four but he had no choice but to keep Mao as an hero as people have been brainwashed into thinking Mao is the Great Helmsman. By publicly denouncing Mao, he will be committing political suicide.

Chiang rescinded China unequal treaties with the Western powers after WW2, vigorously fought for China permanent seat in the UN security council which CCP trumpeted as their achievements.

The Western powers were only too happy to give KMT more money, weapons and ammunition to fight against CCP if he gave up revoking the unequal treaties and the UN security seat. Chiang refused and chose China national dignity over his party political survival.

He's a millennial culprit. 千古罪人。His Great Leap Forward brought China two hundred years backward economically and his Cultural Revolution brought China two thousand years backward culturally. I remember Thailand as the original land of fakes. In my schooldays, Thai fake Cartier wallets and Dunhill belts were the fashion of the day. When I grew up and finally visited Thailand, all kinds of fakes from jerseys to watches lined the streets and marketplace. Haven't been to China, but by reputation, I avoid buying Chinese made products. That's worse than Thailand because Thais sell fakes as fakes. Chinese seem to try to pass off fakes as real things.

(2) The 'lowest grade' of few batches of finished goods produced. Chinese advertised or lie that this products is of highest grade produce & of good quality. Thus consumers believe & paid higher price for it & got cheated.

(3) After making huge profits from the inferior FG the Chinese will use the profits generated into buying better raw materials now to produce and improve on quality assurance. The remaining profits use to advertised its product loud & big as prove the manufacturer make & sell real goods

The above is just simple process of how Chinese businessmen started out first before making a good reputation for their business.

Still,it was corruption.
US congress & president were convinced that KMT was just a bunch of greedy bastards who only wanted to enrich their pockets,and they saw in Chiarman Mao,a new generation of young Chinese leaders with idealism,to build up China,remember at that time,cold war has not started and CCP was not considered an enemy.

During that 1949 era onward.. there is still US intervention to prevent mainland China CCP from attacking Taiwan. Later there is also a Taiwan Relation Act to protect the island if PRC invade it.

I believe Chiang should have rebuild the ROC army to defense against the PLA.

In 1990s, the national service is Taiwan require the young men to serve 3 full years in the ROC army conserving the active personnels in ROC army in case mainland China attack Taiwan

On paper the Taiwan Strait was neutralized to protect Nationalist China, it was actually a shrewd move by the Soviet agents in Truman govt to also ensure ROC cannot counterattack mainland China as well. ( PRC had transferred 60% of it's standing army in rotation to take part in the Korean war thus the need to avoid a two front war against a possible ROC-USA joint invasion on her southern provinces. )
