The salesman was caught on video reacting angrily towards a customer, and even resorted to hurling vulgarities at him. (Screencap from YouTube)

The video of a salesman in Sim Lim Square hurling vulgarities at a customer has gone viral over the Internet and is creating quite a buzz among Singaporeans.

The incident occurred after the salesman was asked for a price breakdown of a camera he had sold to a Chinese national.

Chen Tao, a 25-year-old Chinese national, said he had wanted to buy a Sony video camera. However, he was recommended a Sanyo one and reportedly paid more than S$1,700 for the camera with accessories. Subsequent checks revealed Chen and his friend had overpaid for the camera.

Chen and his friend then went back to the shop with a hidden video camera in an attempt to expose the salesman.

It's an improvement, only vulgarities were thrown at the customer & not punches :)

The PRC chap is lucky that there were multiple sources for him to check and confirm that he was over-charged by unethical business practices. And he planned his way to expose and root out this crook. However, there are big items in life even if we feel overcharged, we still got to take it LL. :(

for all u know, the ahtiong couldve been using the same DVcamcorder that he bought, to film the sequence of events.

anyway, SLS is like the epitome of yellow ribbon project. its probably the only place on this island that gives scumbags a new lease of life in being a salesman at the retail outlets. those that play punk & dying to make a quick buck deserves such exposures. anyway, not as if we dont know, though its reported that the fella got sacked, but in actual fact, he couldve been attached to a different outlet & still practicing his ripoffs as he does best.

without SLS, where else can the scumbags find income? even peddling of duty-unpaid ciggies already quickly replaced by FTs already.

Sim Lim Square and Lucky Plaza: Bargain heaven or rip-off joint?

By Benjamin Koe – May 26th, 2010

Sim Lim Square: bargain buys or rip-off joint? (Reuters)

I didn’t actually think Sim Lim Square (SLS) had that bad a reputation until I read about the 30% increase in complaints to CASE recently.

It seems the situation is so bad that the consumer association is about to launch an accreditation programme to clean up the Rochor Canal Road shopping complex, a famous hang-out for tech geeks and tourists alike who can spend hours trawling the six floors of IT hardware and consumer electronics shops.

The mall has a dismal record — the number of consumer complaints against its shops has gone up for five years straight. Nearly 250 were filed with Case last year, 30 per cent more than in 2007. Sure, I’ve heard about one or two rotten eggs, but 250! I’m now pretty sure that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Among the major complaints are customers being fleeced, salespeople making misleading claims and shops selling defective goods.

Recently, it was reported that someone ended up paying $950 for a PSP while it was quoted to him at $334. Although this particular case was more a theft than a con, it happened at SLS.

The more I dug into this issue, the more I started to find.

As far back as 2007, stories such as these were found on SGcafe Forums:
