Statement by Reform Party not helpful
Friday, 14 January 2011
Singapore Democrats

Reform Party's article "Why the gazetting of TOC should be a wake-up call" written by Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam included a part that read:

Meanwhile some of the alternative parties are almost silent online, whilst some take their presence in the new media so seriously that they seem indistinguishable from the very same sites which exist merely to comment on political agendas. Others such as the Workers Party famously ban their candidates from commenting on blogs in their own names.

Even though we cannot and do not speak for other parties, we find these remarks about opposition parties unhelpful and not in keeping with the spirit of opposition cooperation. In particular, we find the phrase "some take their presence in the new media so seriously that they seem indistinguishable from the very same sites which exist merely to comment on political agendas" rather puzzling.

We will not respond to the statement this time because we would like to try to foster greater trust amongst the opposition. But we ask the Reform Party to refrain from making such unnecessary deprecating remarks about opposition parties in the future.

SDP has already responded to the statement by asking RP to refrain from making remarks about other opposition parties that they deem to be unnecessary and deprecating. What happened to freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of association? It's no difference from PAP asking TOC to register to whip them into line. But PAP is in power. SDP doesn't even have a single seat in Parliament and already speaking like that in and to public. Why not just a private e-mail to Kenneth J.?

What happened to freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of association? You should be asked the same thing - why should SDP be Parliament to speak "like that"? And why do you deem RP which is also not in Parliament have the right to speak "like that" but SDP doesn't?

It's simple. The arrogant RP believes in opposition unity, but poked fun of other opposition parties and threatened 3-cornered fights. The one thing SDP did was to point out their inconsistency and waivering stand.

Then again they (RP) say different things at different times, so no one is sure where they stand.
