MediaCorp wins Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year title at Asian TV Awards
By Satish Cheney | Posted: 10 December 2010 0214 hrs

SINGAPORE: Regional broadcaster MediaCorp has bagged the Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year accolade at the annual Asian Television Awards.

It had won the Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year award in 2007 and 2008. Terrestrial Broadcaster was not a category in 2009.

Held at the Pan Pacific Hotel on Thursday evening, MediaCorp's Channel 5 was named Terrestrial Channel of the Year.

It was a night of glitz and glamour, with top celebrities and head honchos from around the region gathering to celebrate and give recognition to the best of the best in the television industry in Asia.

And there was extra reason for Asia's leading broadcaster MediaCorp to party, as it won both prestigious awards.

Lucas Chow, CEO of MediaCorp, said: "This is actually the entire Asia-Pacific pitching against each other and winning the Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year together with the Channel Award is a very rare thing.

"This is especially meaningful to us because the way that it is judged is by our peers. It is not by popularity votes, so to be recognised by your peers that you're doing well is also an extreme honour for MediaCorp."

Lim Suat Jien, Executive Vice President of MediaCorp's Channel 5 and Okto, said: "This is really due to the tenacity and the talent, and also a great sense of humour from the Channel 5 programming team and the Channel 5 production team."

MediaCorp's Channel 5 "The Noose" won Best Comedy Programme, with actor Chua En Lai bagging the Best Comedy Performance by an Actor or Actress award.

Michelle Chong and Alaric Tay both were highly commended for their roles in the show as well.

Remesh Kumar, Vice President of Content Creation Division, MediaCorp TV, said: "For "The Noose", we were lucky to have a very fantastic cast and we have a group of writers who are really, really very good and you know "The Noose" is a satire and a parody of Singapore life. And to write something creatively and make a joke out of it - and Singaporeans enjoy that."

The Channel's legal drama "The Pupil" saw Rebecca Lim winning Best Drama Performance by an Actress in a leading role, while Lim Kay Tong won Best Drama Performance by an Actor in a supporting role.

The show was also highly commended under the Best Direction category.

The Singapore Idol 2009 final won Best Music Programme.

MediaCorp's "Angel" did not win the Best Single Drama or Telemovie but was highly commended, as was Channel NewsAsia's "Almost Famous - Close Up For The Kathoey" (Episode 1) - for Best Social Awareness Programme category.

Actor Chen Shu Cheng was highly commended for his role in "With You", while actress Constance Song received similar accolades for "together".

Three new award categories were also introduced this year - Best Lifestyle Programme, Best Drama Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Drama Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.

This year's awards also witnessed the formation of the ATA Advisory Board which will promote the awards in their respective countries as the industry endeavours to nurture and develop future talents.

The Board consists of members from Singapore, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines.
