Star studded line up for Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship

Local champion Douglas Whyte says another local Brett Prebble is the man to beat in the 2010 Cathay Pacific International Jockeys’ Championship but a star studded line-up of ten other world class jockeys, four of whom have never ridden at Happy Valley, will be hoping for a different outcome.
Whyte, a three times CXIJC winner and ten times champion jockey in Hong Kong, believes his number one rival Prebble has the best book of mounts in the four-leg jockeys' series.
“I've got some nice chances but Brett Prebble looks the likely winner. He's drawn some really good mounts and is the man to beat. A couple of my mounts might need an ounce of luck and I'd say I'm hopeful rather than confident,” Whyte said after all the riders were introduced to the media at Happy Valley on Tuesday afternoon.
Nash Rawiller (Australia), Hiroyuki Uchida (Japan), Joao Moreira (Singapore) and Julien Leparoux (USA) are the four competitors with no experience of Happy Valley but they were given a tour of the track and the quartet is unfazed by tackling “new ground”.
“These are all top class jockeys and they won't have any trouble negotiating a track which is new to them. I've ridden on plenty of tight tracks at home and I'm sure it's the same for the other lads,” said birthday boy Rawiller who turns 36 tomorrow. Rawiller's only previous experience in Hong Kong was his unplaced ride on Elvstroem in the 2005 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin.
“It's great to be here and a real pleasure to be involved. And what better birthday present could I hope for than to ride a winner at Happy Valley,” Rawiller said.
American visitor Leparoux echoed Rawiller's thoughts. “Don't worry we've got plenty of small, tight tracks in the States. It won't be a problem. A few people here have told me I have some good mounts so I am reasonably confident. It is fantastic to be here and I'm really looking forward to the night's racing,” he said.
Leparoux, 27, was the leading rider in the USA in 2006 and in 2008 he rode seven winners in one day at Churchill Downs. In 2010, he has made a great recovery from a broken back sustained in a race fall at Pimlico in May. “It was a couple of days before the fracture was discovered and I rode on painkillers before I realised the extent of the problem,” Leparoux said.
Frenchman Christophe Lemaire, one of the three joint CXIJC winners last year, said that riding at the Happy Valley for the first time would not be an issue for his “new” rivals. “We all know it's a tight track and a bit unusual but you know all the local horses know how to handle it. They get themselves around the bends. As usual it will be a great night and great fun. It's nice to be here again,” he said.
Japanese jockey Uchida, fresh from his championship tally of 146 winners last season, is pleased to be part of this year's competition. “I'm really looking forward to it. I like the track, the ground is good and there will be a great atmosphere,” he said.
Ryan Moore and Johnny Murtagh, joint winners last year with Lemaire, are back to chase outright victory in 2010. “It's always a great night. I'll be doing my best and I am told that my mount for Tony Cruz [Eastern Empire] has a good chance in the last leg,” Murtagh said.
