Team S'pore performance at Asian Games not a failure: Chef-de-Mission

SINGAPORE : Chef-de-Mission Low Teo Ping feels that Team Singapore's performance at the Asian Games has not been a failure despite not meeting the earlier target of 30 to 33 medals.

With only two days left to the end of the Asian Games, Team Singapore has currently garnered 17 medals (4 Gold, 7 Silver and 6 Bronze), way short of the 27 collected in the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

There were stellar performances by swimmer Tao Li, the bowlers and sailors, but Team Singapore did not shine in many of the 22 sports they competed.

The Chef-de-Mission admitted that host China offered stiff competition.

Still, he felt that a more detailed analysis of the performance of the 240-member contingent would show otherwise.

Singapore also competed in the most number of team events at the Asian Games - 5 in total - including water polo, football and hockey.

Singapore was expected to win medals in the rugby and dragon boat events.

"The competition just stepped up but we did well in fact... we surpassed the time set in the Dragon Boat World Championships, as well as the Dragon Boat Asian Championships," said Raizal Adbol Jalil, Team Manager, Dragon Boat, Guangzhou China.

Team Singapore arrives back from Guangzhou on Sunday.
