After the frank disclosure, let's move on

WE SHOULD exercise a sober view of the Mas Selamat Kastari affair, including the latest disclosure in Parliament on Monday, rather than resort to knee-jerk reactions ('Mas Selamat given shelter by his brother's family'; yesterday).

It would have been natural for Mas Selamat to have sought sanctuary in his brother's flat.

As a police officer who has since retired, I am of the view that it is not uncommon for high-profile criminals to seek refuge in the homes of their close relatives before picking a right time to flee to a safer haven.

These are the facts: Mas Selamat is now securely in detention; the family members and relatives who harboured him have been punished.

So we should move on, especially after the frank and transparent disclosure of the latest episode by Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam in Parliament.

The wrongful actions of Mas Selamat's family members and relatives do not in any way reflect the attitude or behaviour of the Malay-Muslim community, which is loyal and patriotic, and as concerned about terrorism as other communities.

I am certain the Malay-Muslim community disapproves of and does not support the beliefs and attitude of Mas Selamat, or the actions of his family members and relatives who harboured him.

Such need to gloss over gross negligence by fawning poodles is pathetic to say the least.

Previously the catchphrase was "caught by surprise" and now the flavour of the month "human error" and human failure." We can wait forever to hear "we are sorry for the lapse" or "I failed my duty and I am tendering my resignation." These fellas want to have their cake and also eat them. Highest paid politicians in the world but never have "human failure" except the lower subordinates take all the blame and punishment.
