This is example from Seagate, but I am sure every brand will produce their own. It mixed Solid State (Flash) with Winchester HDD. There is 4GB of SSD in this 500GB Winchester example. That flash is another layer of cache from which the drive will transfer data to the slower HDD at time that users are not awaiting. Unlike the RAM (upto 64MB these days) cache the Flash are not lost when power is suddenly lost. HDD these days use their spindle mass to store some power to flush their RAM Cache when power is lost, but this is very limited. 4GB of Flash is only few dollars these days, so it is worthwhile.

There are SSDs in the market now hopefully this new drive is much cheaper.

However, Window 7 64 bit can supports more then xx GB memory, so why would I go for SSD? When it can cache in memory and do away with the memory bus to disk IO?

Linux 32 (less) & 64 bits (much more) can do that and Mac also can do that, and Unix and BSD all can do that, only MS did it lastly in the market.;) However that is Entirely out of the whole point for DISKs, because RAM & Disk are different categories totally, RAM become blank after power off, DISKs don't.;) The limits of RAM is still very poor with MS BTW, Linux x86_64 kernels limits are at 16TB per CPU. Linux servers from Oracle Sun website are selling 256GB RAM, super computers installations running Linux over 2000 CPUs and installed physical memory into hundred TB range.

Disks are 1stly for you to boot, RAM you can hardly boot, with exception of virtual machines strapped to RAM disks for ultra high performance, or you purchased battery backed RAM DISKs costing hundreds of times more than SSD.

Linux: On 64-bit systems, Linux supports up to 16 EB (~2^64 bytes) of memory,
which is about 16 million times more than the 1 TB limit of MS. This the Linux kernels limit, which is higher that the physical limits of commercial CPUs e.g. x86_64. There is no point for MS to develop nor test anything big because even MS themselves are not going to use their own OS for any machine that big (practically) .:D It is their shame!

Piang eh ssd are very fast. You install windows on an SSD And it starts up super fast and access programs fast!

I was thinking of adding a SSD HDD to my current WD 1 GB Green HDD. However considering only the lower capacities of 60GB which are selling for under $300.

I'm still using XP on my i7 system with 4GB of RAM, 3 monitor setup & don't know if an SSD will boost speed that much:confused:

In my case I may get a better bang for the buck by upgrading my graphics card? Been looking at the Radeon 6870 cards. Don't play games, just reading some graphs on a daily basis.

Just learn Google what RAM disk is all about. So alternatively, you can also have a extra memory cache for all your last access disk file, but you are saying it is very expensive. I'll wait for price to comes down. :)

Unless it is battery-backed-up RAM everything inside is lost when power is off. There is no commonly sold NV-RAM, but there are industrial NV-RAM that has internal lithium battery. However even battery have a limited lifespan, which means it will keep your memory content only as long as there is still power in battery, when it eventually run flat, it is blank again as well. HDD can store as long as the magnetic records sustains, usually many years.
 
I already have the very fast hard disk. It is call ssd.
This extra large cache only useful in benchmark. Useless in real world application.

Ssd is the future.
 
Reminds me of the Seagate Barracuda HDs 10 over years ago, it's the pride of Seagate n there was a case of stealing in container loads! The factory was at this kallang as I recalled...it's $4xx per HD at that time! So many ppl got involved from top to the bottom...
