After Qantas had the engine problem SIA was quick to clear their A380's for operational use.

Now they are quietly replacing some of these engines:eek:

Why is our world class airlines SIA so cavalier about safety:mad:

Singapore Airlines said on Wednesday it will change the engines on three of its A380 aircraft following an engine blowout last week on a Qantas flight.

The Rolls Royce engines on the three SIA aircraft, currently in Sydney, Melbourne and London, will be fitted with new engines, but the model will remain the same, the airline said.

"We apologise to our customers for flight disruptions that may result," Singapore Airlines said.

An airline spokeswoman described the engine change as "precautionary, as advised by Rolls Royce".

She said the engine would remain the Rolls Royce Trent 900, with a minor variation.

Qantas is looking into its use of A380 engines as part of a wider investigation into why a Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine blew apart last week, forcing the world's largest passenger plane to make an emergency landing in Singapore with 459 passengers and crew on board.

Shares of the airlines, the world's second-largest carrier by market value, opened 0.12 percent lower on Wednesday after it reported its second-quarter earnings and a fine by the European Commission.

SIA earned S$380.2 million ($295.9 million) in the quarter ended September, compared with a S$159 million loss a year ago, helped by a strong recovery in passenger traffic, especially in the premium segment.

The carrier was also fined 74.8 million euros after the European Commission ruled that its cargo unit was involved in a price-fixing case involving several airlines. SIA said on Wednesday it is likely to appeal the ruling.

Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Lufthansa operate A380 jets powered by different versions of the Trent 900 engine series.

The model fitted to the six Qantas planes is more powerful than that used by Singapore and Lufthansa, producing 72,000 pounds of thrust.
