THE Reform Party has decided not to join an alliance of three opposition parties known as the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA).

Reform Party secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam said it is withdrawing its application to join the alliance, citing developments this week which have deepened a rift between Potong Pasir MP Chiam See Tong, who is SDA chairman, and the SDA's secretary general Desmond Lim.

Mr Lim and the SDA's two other component parties have clashed with Mr Chiam whether to admit the Reform Party (RP) into the alliance. Sources in Mr Chiam's Singapore People's Party (SPP) said the opposition veteran is now thinking of pulling his party out of the SDA, to pursue merger plans with RP.

On Wednesday, Mr Jeyaretnam said the Reform Party is also open to working with Mr Chiam and his party. He said: 'We continue to admire Mr Chiam for reaching out beyond his safe seat and feel we have much common ground still.

'The people are ready for an alliance and we will continue to explore ways of allowing Mr Chiam and the SPP to join with TeamRP in forming a dream team to contest the next election.' Merger talks between Mr Chiam and Mr Jeyaretnam have been on-off since June last year. There were put on hold in May when a document with 11 points of agreement between the two leaders was leaked to the media.

Both have gone on joint walkabouts in the Bishan-Toa Payoh and Hong Kah GRCs. SDA also comprises the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) and the Singapore Justice Party. It was set up in 2001 for opposition parties to pool resources and contest as a united force.

Actually, CST should just sack Desmond Lim from the SPP and the guy would no longer have any right to represent SPP in the SDA. Desmond would then have to join another party (maybe Justice Party or PKMS) to remain as secretary-gen of SDA. Tio boh?

Why are there problems when elections are around the corner

Could there be PAP moles in these parties stirring the pot?

I think Chiam heard news that Krafty is intending to join SDA.

The easiest way to win is to create strife between the opposition parties...

:D:D

Very simple. Desmond has been eyeing Potong Pasir. Suddenly Chiam wants to give it to Mrs Chiam. Hopefully Desmond will still take on Mrs Chiam. Will be good to have Sitoh running Potong Pasir after the next elections.

as much as many of my friends and family have been supporting CST, Sitoh looks like having a damn good chance of winning if election is held now.

better still CST kena kick out of SDA and by election is held now.............

After SDP fiasco, the oppo parties have something that doesn't allow them to sack any MPs.

Politicians are as fexible as a snake. These oppositions are as stiff as a iron rod.
Can't they just give way for a common objective.

Letting Sitoh win is like having a jab 10 yrs later. You choose someone that was rejected long ago. Shown that PAP was right, you don't choose him, eventually still have to use him. Hiding 1 corner smirking telling everyone the durian is ripe.

Anyone can win except sitoh. ;)

The ghost of JBJ.

He does look like his father JBJ.

Old fart look at him cannot stand he is seeing the ghost of JBJ. Old fart enemies will neber go away and come back a ghost.

Apparently LHL doesn't look exactly like Old fart. If they look alike are then they will confused Sinkies.

Couldn't agree more. Uncanny resemblance. I wonder if he has any kids to take up the battle once he is gone. The family is the nemesis to the Lee family.

Sitoh is not unpopular. He is just less popular than Chiam. If Lina or Desmond tried to take on Sitoh, there is a high chance they will lose, because there is no Chiam factor to tip the vote. Being a MRS Chiam will probably not be good enough.

That is why, despite all the rhetoric, Chiam is going to say, cannot form alliance with RP because kena sabo by Desmond, so he'll stay in Potong Pasir.

Having talk to Sitoh before, I don't think he is humble enough to serve the people. He acts like he is already a MP. Just my personal opinion. That was 4 years back.

Let's see what happens if it's Sitoh v Lina. But I bet Chiam will chicken out and contest Potong Pasir.
