STOMPer siyinglee was astonished when she had to pay $50 for a single durian. She went with her friends to a durian stall in Geylang on Saturday.
Said the STOMPer in her email contribution (Oct 30):
"$50 for a durian??
"On 30 Oct 2010, my friends and I visited this durian stall near Lor 17 Geylang to satisfy our durian cravings.
"We, being newbies to durian-hunting, just asked the 'gangster-looking' hawker for his recommendation.
"There were 2 batches of durians on display, $18 per kg and $28 per kg.
"The hawker recommended 1 from the $18 per kg batch. From the look of it, my friend believed that it would cost around $25.
"Since it was our first time trying this kind of 'top-grades' durian, we were willing to pay the price.
"But to our astonishment, the hawker weighed it, and asked us to verify on the scale that 'it' weighed 2.8kg.
"He immediately cut up the durian and asked us to pay $50 for it.
"Even so, we did not quarrel with the hawker about it and just disgustedly consumed our durian that was made of 'gold' as we were concerned about our safety from the 'gangster-looking' vendor.
"I believe they are capable of doing this to tourists and newbies who just want to savour the king of fruits in the area.
"I would like to take this opportunity to warn other patrons of this particular durian stall."
