Why budget hotels must be reined in
Letter from Lionel De Souza

05:55 AM May 03, 2010

I WAS flabbergasted after reading Mr Tang Li's letter "Hourly rates not only for vice" (April 30).

Mr Tang's point was that if one understands the dynamics of Singapore, one would realise that hourly rates at budget hotels do provide a necessary social service.

My understanding of necessary social service refers to organised efforts to advance human welfare; such as public assistance provided by a government for its disadvantaged citizens.

I regret that I must split hairs with Mr Tang on the contents of his letter, in that, Singapore has one of the best public transport systems in the world.

I cannot agree that people working the late shift, and those whose line of work entails them to drink heavily, need to check into budget hotels instead of going home. It is cheaper for anyone to take a taxi home to any part of Singapore, than pay the room charges at a budget hotel.

As for unmarried couples finding solace in the confines of a budget hotel room, that is their personal choice.

However, when budgets hotels start sprouting up in residential areas, the Government must take steps to close them down - to prevent moral corruption of the young by suppressing prostitution and other nefarious activities taking place on the door steps of residents whose properties happen to be within close proximity of budget hotels.

Other than being used for trysts and immoral purposes, rooms at budget hotels are also used by gambling syndicates to operate illegal "casinos", drug addicts to abuse drugs, fugitives of the law who dare not return home for fear of being arrested, etc.

I trust that my brief discourse will give an insight on why it is imperative for the relevant authorities to come down hard on budget hotels, as they have a tendency to be a thorn in the flesh to law-abiding people.

Prevention is better than cure
Letter from Ronald Koh

05:55 AM May 06, 2010

I REFER to "Why budget hotels must be reined in" (May 3) from Mr Lionel De Souza, who said that "if budget hotels started sprouting up in residential areas, the Government must take measures to close them down ... ".

My question to him, then, is: Was it not the Government who approved those "budget hotels in residential areas" in the first place?

To this end, I would like to enlighten him and everyone, too, that "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure".

Mr Lionel De Souza should tell us why the government approved these budget hotels in the 1st place. Secondly, why allow hourly rates? Surely not to cater to tourists. Thirdly, why allow these hotels in the vicinity of residential
areas? We can't blame the hotels for these problems, can we? The government OKed it.

I find it strange that such budget hotels are approved by the government. Don't you need the rooms to have natural ventilation? There is also no area at the front of the hotel for passengers to disembark from taxis or cars. Road accidents may occur. The Hotel 81 vehicles that comes to collect its laundries etc are always blocking the road.

Can only guess that the government OKed these hotels to cater to the growing number of working foreigners in S'pore. Also, to the locals who need such a place. Otherwise we will have lots of activities in motor-vehicles or public areas. Lesser of two evils I suppose.

Mr De Souza, got it?

I am just amazed that a corrupt cop is giving lessons on morailty.

He dropped Dorothy long time ago.

The one he is with, not Dorothy?, the one called Christopher, his son??

Do not understand what the bloody thing about the budget hotel?, like someone said here, URA or is it BCA who approves the zoning for the hotel right.

In order that the hotel being built wether near to whatever, they need to submit approval to URA, NEA, PUB, SCDF & The Singapore Police Force; once they obtain all the approvals in writing & with a reference number; then they can proceed to build the hotel. Not to mention, HSA also, since it is a boarding house & they have food & beverages.

Anyway..it is a wayang!. If what that Lionel is saying...the youth today are the most corrupted morally...they don't do it in budget hotel, they do it anywhere & almost everywhere.

What a bloody prude he is!:p

this Lionel De Souza, i know his son who became ah gua... now at changi village working.

Sgt, that was his rank. He was actually sacked by the Police Force for assaulting an accused person. He appealed and the Police Force allowed him to retire.

The old timers will remember he went around collecting money, using cars from rental companies without paying. Never paid the bills at drinking holes. Having affairs. He also had the habit of informing the press of his cases to seek attention. He went on to work as Hotel Security for Oriental Hotel but it began to make the papers on various crimes as he could not keep his mouth shut.

Then became PI. Hopeless guy. He is supported by his 2nd wife who is an accountant.

Can you imagine someone who writes and speaks well retiring after 30 years as a Sgt. So many disciplinary charges for assault and misconduct.

Bro, got sauce for it?

I know he is a retired cap, but now a private investigator and has a PI firm.

Have actually met Lionel personally, in my course of work...hmmmm!!, so the woman helping him is an accountant & his current wife? or ?? ;)

who's this guy again? someone famous or perhaps more infamous?

He's a piece of shit, a decomposed prawn, chinese termed it. Someone from singaporean skeptic says he's like a chihuahua yelping to his master for a piece of leftover.

Is this attention seeking turd still living in Stratford Court? Is he still strutting there as though he owns the whole bloody condo?

I should salute his vigilance when he allegedly called the entire bomb disposal unit and SWOT team when he found an abandoned suitcase in the condo common area. And rousing everyone from their sleep...

Has this retard ex-Policeman ever wondered if the reason people go for budget hotel and hourly rates could be the same reason they go for telcos who charged by the minute instead of by the hour or day?

What's wrong with having budget hotels which offer 2 hour stays?

If I am a tourist with a few hours to stop over, and I need a room to rest, clean and wash up and prep for the next trip, won't a budget hotel that charges by the hour completely and totally meet my objectives?

If we are a loving unmarried couple, and wish to escape our crammed HDB flat, grab some privacy away from family members, and don't wish to waste our energy, time and money hanging out in malls and meaningless window shopping, won't a budget hotel be the perfect hangout?

If I wish to spend my tryst with my secret lover, won't a budget hotel fit the bill?

Lionel ought to know better - bloody adulterer himself.

My sympathies. There is no one better that can use personal information to damage people than him.
