Republicans deal stinging mid-term rebuke to Obama
AFP
AFP - 1 hour 1 minute ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - – Resurgent Republicans smashed the Democratic power monopoly Tuesday, exit polls projected, in a debilitating blow to President Barack Obama just two years after he took power on a tide of hope and history.

Exploiting fear and fury over the stuttering economic rebound, Republicans grabbed back the House of Representatives, though Obama's beleaguered Democrats clung onto the Senate, albeit with a reduced majority.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, tipped to replace Nancy Pelosi as speaker, warned Republicans would only work with Democrats if the president changed course. Related article:Americans told Obama 'change course': Republican leader

"We hope President Obama will now respect the will of the people, change course, and commit to making the changes that they are demanding," a tearful Boehner told a Republican victory rally in Washington.

"To the extent he's willing to do that, we're ready to work with him. But make no mistake, the president will find in our new majority the voice of the American people as they've expressed it tonight."

Surely nobody REALLY expected a black guy to achieve anything significant.

It's Democrats vs Republicans

Not Obama vs Republicans lah.......

U think obama knows anything about the economy? he's a law professor

Stupid fellow, the least he could do is give some freebies[pap style] before the mid-term. money can do wonders; been proven many times.

With this loss during mid term, Obama can rally his troops two years later and if the economy still does not recover, blame on the Republicans.

Whatever smart rejoinder you may respond to this with, I condemn and will always condemn the racist innuendo expressed here.

If blacks were good at running a country, the African continent wouldn't be such a basket case.

Yes, we cunt! I've nothing but absolute contempt for all leftists in the world.

i certainly dun.
i knew this will happen.
high expectation leads to bitter disappointment.

Obama triggered high expectations during his campaign.
A big mistake for any politician and public disappointment
is quick to materialize if they don't see results instantly.

Now the republicans and the tea party are doing the same
mistake. Offering a complete solution for everything.

So back to square one in 2012 - this time for the democrats.

The American politics is so complicated, with lobby groups and powerful interest groups that to put through a change, you really need to bulldoze your way through. Even that will garner criticism. The rise of power of the Tea Party and the Republicans means more must be done behind the scenes before the actual vote to ensure that it goes the right way. This may give rise to selfish personal interests that may 'cloud' the vote. If the different parties vote as one, Obama will have to meet the head of the Tea Party and the Republicans to discuss and explain and garner ideas before voting.

The Tea Party may mirror the sentiments of the people, but they can talk only. They don't have the power to put things through. If their policies were to be put through, the american people will feel the real pain of austerity with more people losing jobs or receiving pay cuts until a new world balance is reached. This means American pay being almost on par with India and China before jobs come back, the significant advantage being transport costs. Already the 10% unemployed is an indication of things to come.

The alternative solution is local firms producing for the local people. This will arise as a result of trade protectionism and will prevent drastic wage drops. We see this in Japan and Europe. It seems to work, they seem to have survived so far. And maybe less population is a good thing, simpler is maybe better. And when the economy is bad, this will naturally occur. We need to reduce our footprint on the planet, to give the environment more space to recover.

The government is criticised for spending huge sums of money. What the government can do, is to spend it on the people instead, as welfare for the unemployed, until they regain their footing in this new economy, instead of doing it the corporate way ie buying over companies that are too big to fall. Institutionally they could be given a lifeline that will be reviewed before money is given to them at any time, and then only sparingly.

The Tea Party is a movement. Not organized as a real political party. The main personalities are Glen Beck, Sarah Palin and Co. No one claims they are the leader. Thats the concept. A movement to reflect and project people power without the usual trappings of a organized political party structure.

Its power comes from the fact that the old establishment - Democrats and Republicans are forced to change their old way of doing business as usual, minimize the effect of heeled power deal brokers or face the prospect of voters defeating them by default..voting for the Tea party. American politics may have to change because of this new people power concept where defeat is a prospect that can occur regardless of all the old strategies of horse trading and cutting deals between the two party establishments. The tea party will be a spanner in the works from now on.

Just my opinion .

Every US government inherits a huge deficit when they step into office. 'Change' in campaign sounds great, but in practice can cause a lot of pain.

Obama needs to come up with a blue print that will follow for years to come and share with the people so that they will all understand and be on the same page.

For example, 10% budget cuts across all the departments with a 5% additional grant conditional on review, review and dissolving overlapping or unnecessary expenditure, cuts in foreign spending and other discretionary expenditure. This will again lead to job losses and pay cuts.

And debt restructuring maybe?

That's great. I don't really understand fully and you clarified things. Thanks.

Clinton inherited a deficit. He left a budget surplus to George Bush and the latter turned that into a deficit.

America will bounce back, deficit or not. Right now it is going through a cyclic downturn amplified due to various mistakes done in excess. But then, in a free market economy that is expected and inevitable.

The present election results reflect the 10 % unemployment concerns and the resultant fear and uncertainty that comes along.
