Driver jailed for kidnapping kids of S'porean boss

SHANGHAI: A man hired by a Singapore couple in Shanghai to be the family chauffeur kidnapped their children instead just a month into his job, Chinese media reported.

Shen Guanghui, 43, was sentenced to 11 years' jail by the Minhang district people's court on Wednesday.

The court heard that the Singapore couple, referred to only by their surname Chiang, had hired Shen because he looked honest and had a good-natured face.

Even their children - a boy and a girl - liked the friendly 'Uncle Shen', according to the People's Court Daily. No other details about the family were available.

Shen started work in May and was paid 2,500 yuan (S$490) a month.

But unknown to the Chiang family, he had racked up huge gambling debts, the Shanghai Daily reported yesterday. Worse, he had a criminal record and had served seven years in jail for rape and involvement in gang activities.

Soon after starting work, he asked for a pay advance. He also asked Mrs Chiang to lend him money, giving reasons such as his wife was sick or that he needed it for business.

But after a month into his job, Shen hatched a plot to kidnap the children. His accomplice was a man identified as Tang Haijun.

On June 25, Shen abducted the siblings instead of driving them to school.

He called their mother on his mobile phone, threatening to kill the children unless he was paid a ransom.

He also phoned Mr Chiang to demand 80,000 yuan in exchange for freeing his children.

After talking to his daughter to make sure the children were fine, Mr Chiang went to a designated spot where he handed over 50,000 yuan to Tang.

He was then told to meet Shen somewhere else to give him the remaining 30,000 yuan. When they met, Mr Chiang passed 15,000 yuan to Shen, who released the children without counting the money.

The police, whom the Chiangs had alerted after receiving Shen's calls, arrested Shen on the spot. Tang was arrested the same day.

Besides imposing the jail term, the court fined Shen 20,000 yuan.

His accomplice was sentenced to seven years' jail and fined 10,000 yuan.

Interesting there is no live firing squad to settle with the culprit. In Singapore, he will be hanged.

I doubt that the Spore justice system would have hanged him :(

If the boss is not part of the PAP elite, this PRC might even be allowed to "escape" to avoid embarrassing the PAP & their FT policy

Just look at the media's coverage of crimes committed by FTs. When a FT is involved, they'll conveniently leave that detail out.
