Singapore undecided over new F1 deal beyond 2012

The Singaporean government is yet to decide whether to extend its Formula One race contract beyond 2012.

Earlier this weekend, F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone said he would be happy if the sport continued to return to the Asian city-state for another 20 years.

Singapore, which became F1's first night race in 2008 with a five-year deal, has become a highlight of the annual calendar.

Butsenior minister of state S. Iswaran said on Sunday the government would need to weigh up the costs and benefits before making a decision about the future of the event.

"We want to make sure the economic benefits are justifiable going forward,
" he told reporters at the Marina Bay circuit on Sunday night.

"I would say the decision to proceed will rest on a robust cost-benefit analysis, and clearly the terms on any deal we get going forward," Iswaran added.

Local reports said the current deal includes a two-year option.

Just go ahead and add more years to it .

F1 is good for organisers and suppliers .

F1 is way up there, way above the YOGs, Commonwealth Games or even the real McCoy Olympics. I think only the World Cup surpasses the F1 but that's a silly game of 22 grown men chasing after a piece of rawhide. :D

Ask your fucking policeman who cordon the area !

It's because NO ONE checked on the manpower who cordon the area .

Policemen sick of doing duty in the area . So make your life difficult .

Good that they are more prudent about committing to host expensive events now. The global recession has decreased spending levels and corporations are less prepared to splash money around. More hosting cities are also not extending their contract with F1 because of rising costs. Singapore should consider carefully.

I may agree with you if it is the YOG/Asian Games/Commonwealth Games/Olympics etc. But the F1 is electrifying - and this from someone who thought that the F1 is just an event for little boys to play with their toy cars.

The Singapore govt paid a bomb for the F1 to come to Singapore. Now that Bernie is happy with it, we are trying to get the price down. Not sure Bernie will blink though.

The sound of revving v12 engines might have made your pussy wet last weekend, but the truth is F1 is a very expensive franchise. I doubt the government made any money out of it less the license fees and organising costs.

Bear in mind the night race on a temporary city circuit would cost even more than a normal one to organise.

I have been to the normal ones in Shanghai and KL and thought they were an event of toy cars. But the night/street event is different.

If we are going to build a permanent circuit then I say forget it - waste time.

They should build a circuit around Orchard Road !
Marina Bay to Tanglin and back .

Maybe Make like 3 different race circuits .

And throw in more international acts .

Customised circuits are for whimps like Lewis Hamilton. Street circuits and their unpredictability are the way to go!!

I think they shouldnt just look at it from a monetary point of view as long as the "loss" isnt too great. The event seem to be generating good image with regards to the country. In the long term this is good for us be it getting the rights to hold future events or just introduce the country to the world. And like a lot of pple mentioned earlier, this is not a YOG, a lot of pple actually watch this event so its way better. F1 is the 3rd most watched sporting event in the world BTW

Yes the night race is indeed something else. but you can't escape the realities of profitability. It might be the best thing in the world but there's no point carrying on if your bank account's hemorrhaging. That's why the concordes were grounded.

*spelling correction: concordes

oh suddenly they start to calculate the money. i guess if it is about money, then it is going to end at 2012.

Lewi Hamilton is not a whimp. But you are

You everyday keep on whining here & there. What do you achieve in the end ?

According to Calendar, the world is going to end in 2012. So it a good decision not to host after 2012

I don't think it is going to be unprofitable. But it is a good thing to squeeze F1 now that the night race has become popular. I am also hoping that they will realise the beauty of the street race and replicate this elsewhere, slowly doing away with the circuits. :D

The fans of F1, or car racing is just a tiny group of people in singapore. Even in europe, it is just a small group of followers.

I think it is not worth it in time of austerity, and economic downturn. In good times, yes, but not these days.

USA is hurting and their pain will become our pain pretty soon.
