JARRATT, Virginia (AFP) - – Teresa Lewis, a 41-year-old grandmother, was put to death by lethal injection, becoming the first woman in nearly a century to be executed in the state of Virginia, a prison official said.
Lewis was pronounced dead at 9:13 pm Thursday (0137 GMT Friday) at Greensville prison where she was given a lethal injection, spokesman Larry Traylor said.
Just outside the prison, a group of some 30 death penalty opponents rang a bell and prayed as Lewis went to her death.

Georgia Man Brandon Rhode Gets Temporary Stay of Execution After Suicide Attempt

As time runs out for Teresa Lewis, the Virginia woman scheduled for execution on Thursday despite worldwide controversy over her mental capacity, another death row inmate – this time in Georgia – has been granted a temporary stay of his execution, because he attempted suicide hours before he was scheduled to die.
Thirty one year old Brandon Joseph Rhode was due to be put to death by lethal injection at 7pm on Tuesday night. But, as first reported by the Associated Press, some hours before- either on Monday night or early Tuesday – he attempted to commit suicide and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
In light of the events the Georgia Supreme court granted a stay of execution until 2pm on Thursday, to allow Rhode access to counsel.
Rhode’s attorney filed a motion with the court that his client is incompetent and for him to be executed would violate Georgia’s standards for cruel and unusual punishment. If such an appeal fails the execution is likely to be rescheduled for 9 a.m on Monday.
Rhode and an accomplice, Daniel Lucas, were both sentenced to death for killing three members of the same family during a botched robbery attempt in 1998.
11-year-old Bryan Moss, 15-year-old Kristin Moss and their father, 37-year-old Steven Moss were all shot dead by the pair, one by one as they returned home from school and work interrupting Rhode and Lucas’ attempt to rob their home. They were discovered by wife and mother Gerri Lucas when she returned home sometime later, after the killers had fled the house.
Daniel Lucas has yet to exhaust his appeals and no date has been set for his execution as of yet.

Hi Uncle Yap,
Will you ring a bell outside Changi Prison, when they finally do execute Yong?;)

I will not. I also think Yong have a chance now. Because Ravi etc got Malaysian Govt to voice up for Yong. I am not pro-abolish of DP. I an anti-abuse of DP in Singapore for tiny amount of drug.

I ran into Ravi last night at MRT. He took up exercises and lost weight and became very fit. Good for his health. I am happy to see that. He became very alert and energetic. Good for his campaigns.

I think abolishing DP is a naive idea, too civilized and too pro-live, these activist are too kind and they wrongly believe that humans should be treated so kindly. They had neglected that by taking kindness over-board they had actually caused the opposite of their own aims, in ways worse than executions. I will not elaborate now.

famiLEE LEEgime executed many who don't deserve to die, while they let many others who deserves execution off. That is the angle from which I have to oppose the DP in SGP.

;)

I believe that they will still execute Yong, despite what, after all, the land deal is sealed, and there are no exceptional bilateral issues, other than old man 'farting' every, now & then.

You may have to ring that bell for freedom..:p

Power, money & connection...

One day a friend took me aside
and said I have to leave you
for buying something from a friend
they say I've done wrong
for protecting the name of a man
they say I'll have to leave you,
so now I'm bidding you farewell
for much too long.
And here's a song to sing,
for every man inside,
if he can hear you sing
it's an open door.
There's not a rich man there,
who couldn't pay his way
and buy the freedom that's a high price
for the poor.

The land deal is actually in the international courts far from over.

famiLEE is weakened far more than expected, within the last few years. Most of their falsehoods fell apart. They are in position to back down in many ways. Their past style can no longer sustain.

If you are the lawmaker, you will execute those you deem deserve to die while there are others who get let off. To others they will not perceive the same angle as you. They will also view you as another form of famiLEE LEEgime

There is a question I beg to ask, but nobody seems to know the answers. Aren't the piece of land that the railway run through SINgapore to Tanjong Pagar station, under the Royal Charter ( that is granted in perpectuality?). When the British was here, that land belongs to the Malayan Railway, and when under Federation it was under Malaysia. What was the term of Independence on the ownership & is the land still under The Royal Charter?

Shouldn't the handling over of the land, warrant a parlimentary session on both sides of the causeway?

Could you explain?

Death Penalty: USA executed Ah Mah, 1st in a century

Uncle, you can lose your credibility in no time if you post inaccurate information.

USA executed Ah Mah, 1st in a century?

No! In the past century, USA has executed countless of women.

It is 1st in century for the state of Virginia and not USA.

The last women executed in USA was Frances Newton in 2005 and Aileen Wuornos in 2002 (Aileen Wuornos was portrayed in the movie Monster).

I dig up some info for a list of women executed in USA:

http://www2.wjtv.com/jtv/news/local/article/women_who_have_been_executed_in_the_us/41044/

It's not the first in a century in the US, It was the first in a 98 years in Virginia.
