I thought it best to highlight what a classic case of persecution would look like. The Malik case where the chap posted his angry comments on facebook.

I wish this had gone to court as there is no way a court of law however inclined can convict him. If the passage is read in context, it was meant that Viv should be burned at the polls. This certainly took the focus off the circulating petition calling the resignation of Viv B over the YOG disaster.
Unfortunately they convinced him to apologise to Viv.B and they are now giving the impression that the PAP is magnanimous. What a bunch of pricks. As Mr Brown put's it - one has to "half-brain" to think that he was inciting violence. Note how the press did not give context by mentioning the polls.

The civil servants involved in this should be shamed of the themselves. The Malay community leaders should be shot for not supporting Malik. And what about the opposition parties. Why the fuck are they contesting elections if they can't even make a comment about a case of bullying by the authorities.

Fucking PAP trying to make a martyr out of Seng Han Tong.

“英子你说,我究竟做错了什么啊?没有!”

同时,剧中袁世凯临终的时候,对自己的妻子沈英说,“为什么他们喜欢他,就是不喜欢我。你看,我为他们管着这个国家,给他们饭吃,给他们衣穿,给他们钱花,但他们怎么这么恨我,怎么这么恨我啊!”

- Excerpts from "For the Sake of The Republic".

Agree with yr position that this is a case of persecution. It shows that when any part of the govt apparatchik has moved in and committed a position, the executive branch somehow has to back them up even if it meant lying thru the teeth, distorting the truth, or even miscarrying the course of justice. (I am convinced that the previous Marxist plot case was another one of these stick-to-the-end-with-the-official-first-salvo high handed baloney)

The Malay leaders, the Opp leaders should all be ashamed in not coming to his side. Wrong-footed? Cowed? I am surprised that even AMP was silent on issue. Pro-MUIS we know. Are the Opp parties just playing safe not to wade into a hot controversy and provoke or exacerbate the situation? Or are they shrewd operators giving the PAP enough rope to hang themselves or be lynched by the public at the polls?

Only the SDP youth wing spoke up in defence of Malik.

The fact that Malik is applying to join SDP is immaterial. The other parties appear so afraid of offending the regime that they do not even dare speak up when a fellow Singaporean has been victimized. How can they then claim to represent our interests?

I have spoken to quite a few oppo leaders personally in the past, and know that they actually care when such things happen. But as a whole, the oppo has been a sorry disappointment.

Same thing when NSP was fined for doing grassroots work (selling papers). Not a pipsqueak except from SDP. The saving grace was that the fine was later withdrawn. Had the fine continued to Court, and the silence continued, it would be a very sorry state of affairs.

This is one of the reasons for my post "losing faith in the oppo".

I wrote this as I found out recently that the orders came from the top. I was perplexed that Bedok and the Police Force was already struggling to do what is basic in policing and have the time to do this silly thing.

Once they found that he had a criminal record, they realised that they could bully him. He however stood his ground and spoke coherently. I was impressed. Then when he sent the apology I got curious. Then I found that community leaders pressured the family to cave in.

Bunch of bastards.

Agree with yr position that this is a case of persecution. ?

I was glad that SDP youth wing provided support. This was an opportunity for Chee and Gandhi to speak up but for some reason they remained silent. Its the rest of the opposition that I disappointed with. If this basis case of abuse against a citizen is not addressed I wonder what the fuck they are fighting for.

I too am facing a loss of confidence with the opposition like you.

I was particularly incensed that the order came from the top and that grassroots leaders pressured the family.

There is no way that statement can be interpreted as call for violence. The only saving grace is that Mr Brown came to his defence.

Where the fuck are the our self styled human rights and political activists. Where the fuck was Seelan, Kim Il Jong, Rachel Zeng, Ravi, Lamei, Ti Lik, Yawning bread, Alfian Saat, GMS, Sylvia, .etc

We cry mother and father as colloquial term goes, when it comes to Burmese, Malaysian Indians, some other foreign dumbfucks but no one cares for our Malay breathen who served NS like anyone else.

I am not going to sleep until which prick gave the order.

One thing I don't understand is that VB claimed that he was totally unfazed by the words, and he still had a good night's sleep. That means he was not threatened, and if he was not threatened, it was not a threat. So what was the apology for?

Then again, there is a silver lining in the whole event, including the apology. Feel sorry for the young man, but if he is sensible and mature about this, this could work out for him and more importantly, for the country.
This is not 1987 or 1993 anymore. In this day and age, nobody likes this kind of tactics, even if they succumb to it or even if they are not involved. CSJ reacted adversely when something happened to him in 1993, and the rest is history. There is a chance for this young man to react with grace and dignity, and perhaps the country will rally behind him. Hope that the apology is worded carefully, e.g. that there was never any intention of inciting or causing harm, which of course there wasn't.

One last point, there will always be people who are afraid and who will bow down to authority and succumb to pressure. It doesn't mean they are happy about it.

I think it was mix of bravado and an attempt to tell people and his friends that he did not resort to this kind of tactics. Good point - what was the apology for?

I found the apology unnecessary. Why apologise for something that he did not do. The allegation was inciting violence. He could issue a note to clarify what he said. He clearly said that after his release by the Police.

They went to his office rather than his home or call him up to effect the arrest. This was an attempt to destroy his rice bowl. They could have picked him up at home or called him up.

I have not heard of an arrest of a suspect at his workplace except for outright criminal cases. This is clear abuse of authority.

Poor chap. I think he wrote the apology after his family was pressured. Must be.

As for the bastard who gave orders, I dont think he's VB. Most likely, WKS.

He has control over the SPF, the ISD, and above all, he's close to the family. These days, the Old Man's breath is anybody's command. Even his bad breath is fresh air to sycophants.

Who knows what sublimal message Malik was trying to impart?

In any case, certain things just become sensitive and context becomes irrelevant. If you don't believe that, go to any airport in the United States (the bastion of democracy) and exclaim to your friend (in the presence of a security guard), "It is good that these people are checking so thoroughly. At least we don't have to be afraid of bombs." Whatever the context was intended to be, I bet there is a 90% chance you'll be hauled for a 72 hour interrogation!

Agree with scroobal that the Opposition should unite and voice out their concerns over the Malik affair. It is either a case of fear or ego. Fear as the opposition is worried that they might become the next sued victim of Old Man. Ego as they refuse to help Malik due to their pride. Whatever it is, the Opposition are still uncoordinated and divided. Seems to me they are adopting the "Not my party member, not my problem" approach. I dare say uniting the Sicilian Mafia families in America is easier than getting the Opposition to cooperate and help each other out.

court of law - 1) Broadly any judicial tribunal that administers the laws of a state or nation. 2) A court that proceeds according to the course of the common law. and that is governed by its rules and principles.

court of equity - A court that (1) has jurisdiction in equity, (2) administers and decides controversies in accordance with the rules, principles. and precedents of equity and (3) follows the forms and procedures of chancery.

Hmm. What "court of law" again?

Malik did not mention BBQ Seng...what has BBQ Seng go to do with his case?...there is a song by Deep Purple, "burn" I am sure he knows it by heart.

For a person, to get punched & later to be cauterized by another, must be an arrogant, pompus, B#$@#rd....and BBG Seng is really that genteel , was immolate; then he should be canonized.

Unfortunate Malik is a simple person, the simplest of words he knew how to use was ,BURN..had he used cauterized...ahh!, a rose is rose by another name...it will take them time to know that meaning, and most likely will get away with it.. ha ha ha ha

Malik on the other hand, is no angel either!:D

Oh please. Next we have to re-write it backwards to get the true message. Maybe it was code to activate the sleepers within the Al Qaeda ranks. If any of these was true, ISD would have stepped in. They did that to the wayward church leaders who were certainly sowing discord among the communities.

Here is the punchline - these clowns were invited for a chat. They were not arrested at their workplace and embarrassed. Seems to me double standards and bullying minorities. Malik unlike church leaders had no voters to put off as he did not command a congregation.

Who knows what sublimal message Malik was trying to impart?

I think the opposition like many of us have been conditioned to handle economic issues rather than race, language or human rights issue. The PAP has successfully conditioned us not to interfere if other races are involved. For some reason, we all have been conditioned not to interfere with Police actions.

The SPH photographer arrest case only made the press when the brothel had it own staff against the wall.

That is exactly why they knew they could get away with it and still send a message across to the general public.

That he has a criminal record and that he is a malay. Note that he was a RI boy did not surface until later.

RI boy, his command of Engrish, not that good, shouldn't have used the word, BURN, unless he wants to stoke the ambers & start a FIRE!, which will immolate Vivien, and make him a SAINT!:D

I agree with u that the apathy displayed by our so called oppo parties is shocking.

No coordination, no presence of mind to sense that something must be said or done.

Clearly a case of the strong bullying the weak because they know they can get away with it, that it will frighten those around him, and they know Malik will not cause them to lose votes unlike church elders.

It will be interesting to find out which came first .. his association with SDP or his arrest.
