PM Lee started his National Day Rally speech

Basically, in summary.
History say PAP work very hard to achieve today.
Present day problems "Please be patience"
Future very bright, and please continue to "Dream"

No substance at all.
TCSS only.

I for one don't understand why he is transmitting his messages in so many languages when majority of Sporeans can understand singlish

If his message is going to be targetted at the foreigners he better learn to filippino, indian, bagladeshi,.....

He seemed to have touched on the issues that are causing Singaporeans angst but his answers are not very encouraging. His examples are also not not very good. The end result seems to be business as usual. Here is sample

Example: Mr Tong Shiang Wee, 47
i. Works at Cameron, which makes equipment for the oil and gas industry
ii. Tong joined the firm at age 21 with no school qualifications, starting at the bottom as a trainee fitter
iii. But his attitude was “must try, no harm trying”
iv. Over the years, he kept learning on the job and attended courses to upgrade himself
v. Today, he is a Manufacturing Specialist, overseeing 70 technicians and 4 production supervisors

I don't get this example. The story across the board is not that Singaporeans are not upgrading or upskilling. Its Singaporeans of various skill sets are replaced by cheaper foreign alternative. We are talking about accountants, pharmachist, store executives, engineers, etc that are replaced by cheaper foreigners. He must think that Singaporeans are lazy, no intention to upgrade. The IT sector was the first to be hit beginning in 1990.

By citing this example he is insulting our intelligence.

Bro, though I agree with your comments about tactics and pork barrels, but his speech seems very hollow.

He has also given the impression that Singaporeans are not hardworking, do not upgrade and that foreigners are better. We are losing our jobs to cheaper workers and these includes those at professional grade. I remember a friend of mine who replaced his accountant at half the price.

As far as I am concerned he has not done anything good for the Singaporeans but only for the country. He has thrown bones to NS men to stop them harping on the NS issue vs FTs who have not done NS.

I think NSP and the other opposition have to take a hard look at what you need to do. Do you look after Singaporeans who helped this country or be like the PAP and only look after country and any tom, dick and harry who want to help it.

In his speech, he mentioned about he new medical school and he also mentioned that it will include international students. Good luck.

For a start, the opposition should ask the government to come clean on statistics and how we ended up with doctor shortage and why there is a need to give places to foreign students for medicine. Are you telling me that Singaporeans are not keen to work as doctors just as they are not keen to work as maids or cleaning kopi tiam tables which are the perennial excuse by the Govt, Union leaders and cheap singapore businessmen. This is not a welfare state so there is no reason for Singaporeans not to work as he cannot be on the dole. I am getting the impression that FTs will eventually give the PAP their vote for being FT friendly.

This is definitely the Best Pre-Elections NDR speech I have heard so far because it doesn't involve tactic of giving out ang paos nor "fix opposition" undertones.

Yes, there are many flaws or questions running in our heads when we hear our Prime Minister speaks but for a pre-elections NDR speech, it is really very good. It has deviated from the past PAP's unfair practices and puts up plans to address problems raised in the past one year. This is what a ruling party should do, putting up solutions to problems and using that as their elections platform.

Well, at least as the Prime Minister and leader of the ruling party, he has tried to close up all the gaps on all the potential attacks that opposition parties would put up. That is why, this is considered a Pre-Election rally speech.

I'm pretty disappointed about the speech. The rally speech turn out to be nothing more then a glorified Pro-FT Speech. Nothing about more money for the locals, nothing about anything much for the locals as a matter of fact

On a scale of 1 to 10, I was about to rate the rally a 7 or 8 before channel surfing to watch some football.

Then I heard PM Lee's spin on the YOG.

In spite of overwhelming evidence of the problems of the YOG, he tried to paint it as a success.

This completely destroyed the credibility of the speech. I was left wondering that if he was not telling the whole truth about the YOG, then what else was he not telling the truth about?

I am very pleased with PM Lee on 1 thing. He finally can differentiate between foreign WORKER and talent. Read his speech. He says foreign workers all the time. Then he say talent as in talent without foreign in front.

Thank you PM Lee, you finally wake up to the different in foreign WORKER and true talent. Talent have no nationality. Forein workers are forever foreign.

Now step 1 please ask you MOM polcy change name to foreign worker policy. No other country call foreigner talent all the time.

PM Lee is saying, he will now ban all job advert that say "second upper and above need apply". And he will now make all scholars work from ground up, stopping all special fast track program the civil service has, which effectively kills the career of many capable and good middle managers who are not scholars.

I think everyone is allowed to have their own opinions about the speech. if GMS thinks its good its his opinion, no need to flame him for it

Personally I think the speech is rather lousy, the majority of the speech was wasting time trying to convince us that FTs are needed in our country. It's a freaking waste of time to spent so much time on a topic like this on a speech he does once a year

Subok

I think everyone supports him because he's opposition
There are some who likes him for his guts and participation

IMHO, I think his marketing gimmick about selling his HDB to fund his political party is 1 hogwash. The deposit is refundable I think. So I don't think it is giving but rather lending. He even used some of the money to go tour in HK and TW.
Another gripe I have of him is what did he do after he graduate from NUS to now? For almost 15 years, what did he achieve? This information is not readily available.

Anyway, I think he is an pretty ok guy but why not you make some suggestions for him to improve?
That will help everyone in SG.
