Damaged cable cause of power outage
By Mustafa Shafawi | Posted: 26 August 2010 1747 hrs

SINGAPORE: SP PowerGrid said a contractor carrying out telecoms works at Potong Pasir Ave 1 had damaged a cable, causing the 15-minute power outage in Bishan and parts of Ang Mo Kio Thursday afternoon.

SP PowerGrid said it's discussing with the Energy Market Authority (EMA) on appropriate follow-up actions to be taken.

The 15-minute blackout Thursday affected buildings and residents in the vicinity, as well as a number of MRT stations.

More than 7,000 commuters at 13 train stations from Newton to Marsiling on the North South Line were affected by the short power failure at around 1.30 pm.

Seventeen trains carrying passengers couldn't move and emergency power was triggered for lighting and ventilation in the carriages.

Services resumed after power was progressively restored.

Shops had to resort to manual practices as their cash machines stopped working and shoppers could not use their credit cards to pay.

(who said that before, i forgot) : sporeans is the WEAKEST LINK in preventing damages done to power cable or 'insert whatever necessary here'.

A single severe power line can cause a loss of power to Ang Mo Kio and Bishan?

What can I say?

No redundancy? And where's the contingency to kick in the alternative power? What kind of planning is this?

And the best part is SP Powergrid ask EMA, How ah?

And we have sold all our power station, and who's taking the responsibility for planning and rap?

Sold power station had no link to the incident. Power station is not the one who lay/own the power cable.
Is SP the owner of the cable. They are the middleman buy power from power station and sell to consumer.

I understand that. :)

I was hinting another scenario whereby there are problems which involve buyers of power station (private company) and EMA, so, will there be finger pointing then?

The problem doesn't lie with the infrastructures, we have one of the best or the best infrastructures in South East East Asia, and that is a fact. Then again, we have also one of he best educated & qualified people also in S.E.A., and that is also a fact.

Then what can the problem be? responsiblity, dedication & pride in their work & loyalty to the organizaion and too complacent & no hide in their spurs.

Means flawlessly flaw. :D

But then again in this case, it is obvious somewhere is screwed in planning.

You have put it all in nutshell...

Flawlessly flawed, will get us into some castrophere, if the people don't wake up now!, break in MRT train depot, floodings, 'esacpe of MSK'...what more can we ask, before we actually face some disaster of a huge magnitude that somewhere planning was screwed.

Wait, the best part of it all, those who are involved in the fiasco get scot free & may even get an award or two!:p
