NUS and NTU not within top 100 world universities

Edvantage | Thu Aug 26 2010

The ranking published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University placed NUS at 145th, while NTU did not make the top 300.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) failed to make the top 100 on a ranking of the top universities in the world.

Shin Min Daily reported that the ranking published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University placed Harvard first and NUS at 145th, while NTU did not even make it to the top 300.

In Asia Pacific, Japan's University of Tokyo and Kyoto University were top of the list, and NUS was placed outside the top 10. NTU was ranked between 44th and 68th.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities was conducted by the Center for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

It uses six indicators, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in journals Science and Nature, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

NUS told Shin Min that this particular ranking placed greater emphasis on science research, and on awards like the Nobel Prize and Fields Medals. They said that considering the criteria of the ranking, NUS still managed to clinch a respectable place among the universities of the Asia-Pacific region.

Their spokesperson also pointed out that NUS was ranked 23rd in the "Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences" sub-ranking - fields of study which did not award Nobel Prizes.

NTU's Chief Planning Officer and Registrar Mr Chan Kwong Lok said that the ranking favoured universities with a long history as they included achievements and awards from the institution's inception.

Both NTU and NUS performed better in other rankings such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Why should NUS and NUT make it in the first place?? They are better universities in the world with world renowned staff.
