There are a lot of people who do visit the Philippines for various reasons, though it's a less mainstream tourist destination than Thailand.

I considered going to Manila for a holiday as it's the only regional capital left that I haven't visited. When you don't wish to go far as you only have 4-5 days of leave to burn for this trip, you tend to rule out destination beyond Asean/SEA as the airfare beyond that doesn't justify the shortness of the stay.

I was dissuaded by my spouse, who had visited the place for work before and said that the city was a terrible dump despite the fact that the spouse was already put up in a 5-star hotel.

I also almost booked flight to Cebu, one of the country's more popular beach resorts with a Shangrila resort on Mactan island when I saw good deals from Cebu Pacific and Silkair. Have already been to Bali and Phuket once and twice respectively. Do note that there's now a luxury resort from the super-luxurious Aman group in the Philippines, Amanpulo in Palawan.

Among all the third world capitals in our backwater region, the most manageable and easiest to tolerate for Singaporeans who studied in the US or UK and are used to developed environments is KL.

Manila, if I remember correctly, is still a slum. 24 years of American-style democracy has made no difference. One wonders whether they might have been better off under Marcos' dictatorship. Philippines Senator Loren Legarda called the massacre 'inhuman'
The death toll from a politically motivated attack in the Philippines has now risen to 57, after 11 more bodies were recovered on Wednesday.

President Gloria Arroyo has declared a national day of mourning, and promised the gunmen would not escape justice.

The victims were killed on Monday, as they travelled to file nomination papers for the forthcoming elections.
