SingTel CEO (Singapore) Allen Lew yesterday revealed that SingTel and StarHub "lost a couple of million dollars each".

But it was something that had to be done. The consequences of missing out on the World Cup would have been "disastrous", he told The New Paper in an interview yesterday.

But did we pay too much for the World Cup, since the telcos ended up losing money? Were they held hostage by Fifa's exorbitant demands?

"Hostage is too strong a word," Mr Lew replied. "At the end of the day, as commercial entities, it takes two people to agree on a particular price that makes sense.

When asked what this amount was, Mr Lew said: "I'm sorry, I really can't tell you," citing confidentiality clauses.

But he added wryly that Fifa was focused only on the price.

So it was fixated on the price, we asked. Mr Lew just smiled.

maybe Starhub breakeven, but Singtel's coverage of the event was not as good as Starhub, more people went over to Starhub, maybe Singtel lost a couple of millions while Starhub can just cover. Even if both telcos lose money, I think Singtel lost more

Well, I think STel really got on the nerves of people when they

They Telcos should have let MDA do the bidding as a nation, then sell that to the Telcos or shared as a consortium, since we are a small place. In this way, both the consumers & companies benefits. Since they are so money muddle minded, good for them they loose.

co-bidding yes but don't think there is such a thing as sharing revenue. By co-bidding, they can peg the same price for all their subscribers where there is no competition, and I don't think any company's shareholders will allow co-sharing of revenue. Lack of transparency. And I don't think they will show their accounts to each other too.

Another thing is both companies should be "proud" enough to think that they have the market power to have more subscribers than the other. So this revenue sharing is quite remote.
