Restaurant bombing part of "curry war"
A SUSPECTED "curry war" among several Surry Hills Indian restaurants is heating up, with two food vans firebombed early this morning.
Police said they are investigating whether the arson attack is an act of retaliation, following a restaurant being torched less than a fortnight ago.
Emergency crews were today called to a laneway in inner-city Surry Hills, where they discovered two food van vehicles on fire.
The vans, parked beside the Maya Da Dhaba restaurant, were destroyed - along with the food contents stored in the rear of both vehicles.
Just two weeks ago the Copper Tiffin restaurant on Cleveland St was firebombed in a suspected arson attack.
Police said they were aware of reports there was possibly a “curry war” among several Indian restaurants in the area.
“We are looking at links between the two incidents,” a police spokesman said.
The Copper Tiffin and the Maya Da Dhaba restaurants are side by side, and local residents say there is a lot of competition between the two outlets.
The fire which destroyed the Copper Tiffin on July 6 was deliberately lit.
