If we wait long enough, we can finally get to watch the movies we missed on the big screen and were too cheap to buy or rent the dvd.

Watched Election I last week and Election II last Sat on "free to air" tv.

In Election I, was the ending changed from the big screens? In the tv version, Lok played by Simon Yam was caught by the police after he killed Big D played by Tony Leung Kar Fai. But I understand that in the big screen version, he killed Big D's wife after killing Big D and was not caught by the police.

Hence it was strange when after the tv version where he was caught, he appeared unscathed in Election II.

In Election II, did Lok die in the end? If so, how? I missed part of the movie when I turned to other channels.
The ending was superb, involving Jimmy played by Louis Koo and his realization that his plan to leave the triads, was but a dream.

Other Johnnie To movies that I liked:

Running Out Of Time, starring Andy Lau as a dying con artist and Lau Cheung Wan as a cop.

Eye In The Sky, starring Simon Yam as a surveilance cop, (who has got to be one of the most under-rated HK actors of all time), and Tony Leung Kar Fai as a very evil man.

Any Johnnie To's fans here? Or any of his movies that you particularly liked?

Truely great movies. I caught election 2 at the cinema and they showed how jimmy chopped up and ground one of ah Le's henchman to feed the remains to the dogs. I particularly like mark cheng's character. Claims to only work for money but ends up fighting very bravely and even sacrificed himself on the job.
To answer your question, Ah Le's henchmen cracked after seeing how their friend became dog food and agreed to kill their boss.

It is a little known fact that Simon yam's real life brother is(was?) actually a high ranking anti-triad officer in the HK police force.
I heard johnny to's PTU series is quite highly rated by critics. I've only watched the first show and i would like to see the rest for myself.

So Ah Le's henchmen killed him. How did they kill him? I didn't catch that part.

Ah le was waiting at the char chan teng to confront his son's new gangster friends from the Number gang. when his son saw ah le, he screamed like a girl and ran away. Ah le gave chase and his henchmen followed both of them in their jaguar. Ah le eventually lost his breath and got into the following Jaguar. He got into the front passenger seat and told his men not to frighten the son. Then one of them use a baton and whack his head. then another whack. then another.
But ah Le never took his eyes off his running son.

Thanks for the update.
Ironic justice, considering that his son saw him killing Big D and his wife.

Did he? In the version I watched he wasn't arrested.

Speaking of alternate endings, i know there were different endings for ShaPoLang. Donnie yen's character was actually killed by Sumo hung. He was thrown out of the window and lands on Sumo hung's wife and baby waiting in a car below.

There is also an alternate version for Young and Dangerous 3 where chen hao nan is actually a undercover police inflitrating hung heng.

Different versions for different ratings and markets i guess.

Election 1: Lok siew killed Dai D and his wife but was witnessed by his son doing so and this leads to further strains on father and sons relationship in Pt II

Election 2: Lok siew was hammered to death by his kah kia in a car while seeing his son ran away, Jimmy zai took over the post of chairman but china police want him to keep the post permanent and not elect anymore chairmen. Jimmy zai damn du lan because he want to get out of the Triad but found himself now even more stuck than ever.

The above endings from the unrated cantonese versions :D

you should watch Johnny To's Vegeance.
That french AngMo really kickass.:oIo:

Mainly for China market i supposed, they don't like the message that Crime does Pay :D

some of the better HK movies involving triads & matas are good...election 1 & 2 are superb...like the violence heh heh...

the other ones I like are:

跟踪

意外 - this one didn't manage to finish watching on the plane...will have to buy the DVD or something when in HK...

then there is the classic - 无间道 trilogy.

意外 and 火龙 were both very disappointing. Hk cinema has been struggling lately. The good thing is china has been coming up with impressive stuff. have you watched 风声? or the classic 天下无贼?

天下无贼 yup..is good, esp the ending...the director is 冯小刚 right?

风声 - i thought too China liao...didn't watch...maybe i will try to catch it since its not bad.

yeah it was by 冯小刚. i like the villian 狸叔 played by Ge you.

风声 was introduced by my shanghainese ex girlfriend. i was quite sceptical at first. but it turned out to be one of the best movies i've watched in 2009. the acting, plot and storytelling is excellent. Please catch it!

Im a Johnie To fan too! Mad detective (brilliant movie!!!), PTU & Throwdown are some of my favourites.

Anyone caught "OVERHEARD"? Directed by Mak Siu Fai. HK movies are getting better & better recently.

yeah i've watched Overheard too. Despite the great cast (lui ching yun, louis koo and daniel wu), it didn't make an impression on me. maybe i was expecting more violence and action from these guys.

The english title of this movie is "Eye In The Sky".
Starring Simon Yam as an experienced surveillance cop and Tony Leung Kar Fai as a really bad guy.
Excellent movie, Simon was superb in the movie.

Who were the actors in "Throwdown"? What was the movie about?

Overheard also starred "Da S" Barbie Hsu right?
