Old Guard's feats need to be told
<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->
<!-- end left side bar --><!-- story content : start -->
THE passing of Dr Goh Keng Swee has sharpened the fact that the local media has not dwelled enough on the Old Guard and their enormous achievements.
In the last decade, media attention has centred mainly on Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and deservedly so. But the media has missed out on writing about MM Lee's peers among the first generation leadership.
It is obvious that Dr Goh touched all generations of Singaporeans with his deeds and concern for the people. Dr Goh was a principled leader who cared for the people he governed and delivered on so many fronts.
In my view, he knew he had reaped the opportunity of a great education at a time when it was rare among Singaporeans. He believed that he could make a difference and repaid his homeland by making it a far better place. The late S. Rajaratnam said it best in 1985 when he noted that Dr Goh was willing to relinquish power when he retired from politics. This is the mark of a true and confident leader.
