Puzzle solved 50 years later, thanks to ST photo story
-- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN

I LEARNT something from the '6:39pm' picture in The Straits Times yesterday.

When I was a very little child, my parents used to take me to the railway station at North Buona Vista Road, where the Biopolis now is, to watch the train passing in the evening.

(The train station is gone now, but the track still runs there, and the area is still called Tanglin Halt.)

I used to see the station master handing a bag to the driver of the train each time it passed, looking exactly like this photo, and wondered why he did that. I never found out until now.

Today, after more than 50 years, I discover that it actually contains a brass token, and is a safety measure to ensure that the train with the token is the only one on that two-way section of track!

Lee Hsien Loong
Prime Minister

Dad must have told him, " son, how lucky you are born into a family like us, if not, you will be like that abang over there"...ha ha ha:D

Goes to show Ass Loong will keep quiet and don't ask if he dunno something. Have to wait till 50 years before someone tells him, then he know. :oIo:

And he only relies on the 154th for info and to broaden his General Knowledge. Sad...

My discovery is that Tanglin HALT was so named because there used to be a train stop there.

This is basic knowlege. Used in Europe, US and British colonies for the last 250 years or so before computerisation set in.

Can tell how detached he was from the ground even 50 years ago and am very dissappointed with him. I do not wish to see him for the next 50 years. Singaporeans have been deterioriating because he & his team learned to be very arrogant and couldn't be bothered what has happened to people lives out there until Straits Times (if only they want) have to tell him about it. I doubt even after this, he will not wish to put in much effort to understand the people and how they struggle to cope with livings. Vote out PAP and let them fall on our feet to feel the meaning of reality.

Just like the one in 50 years flood...it seems that for the past 50 years, the MIW's had been sleeping like Rip Van Winkle, collecting fat salaries & sleeping:mad:

lol had a good laff when i saw dat. Cant he ask his parents during e many times he was there? Or too busy catching spiders?
Sad... I tot he was inquisitive...

To be fair to Dear Leader, all of us have had such moments of discovery years after our first observation of something. And many of us also "should have asked our parents", "done our research", etc. But often, we forget or our parents didn't know, and it was not important enough, frankly.

But I detect a darker purpose in this letter. Is this LHL's way of implying that KTM has not progressed in its right of way procedures in half a century?

agree w u htolas but he suggests in his letter dat he been wondering y... Lolx
If we rly wonder smtg wun we ask? N even if his dad dunno, can go ask e stationmaster

10 years later he will write into ST forum and say he finally understand why passenger have to tap their wallets and purses against the gantry at the Mrt.

Of course he don't havethe balls mah. That is why he looks so lost on many issues like HDB flat shortage and high prices, FT influx, casinos, etc. It was his father that implemented all these policies, but he don't dare to ask why. Just like he don't dare ask why the train man gets the token. 50 years from now, he will figure it out and tell us.:D

I doubt it.
My guess is that he is just trying to be "identified by the common man". That's why he mentioned that when he was a child, his parents took him to watch trains, something that sounds what the chinese call "wen xin", or touching and heartfelt.
The funny thing is that he put the words "Prime Minister" below his name, which rather negates what I think he was trying to achieve.

20 years later, he will write in and say that he now understands why some people collect cans from the garbage bins.
Previously he thought that they were can collectors and were doing it as a hobby.
