In the months leading up to the 3 Sep 1964 racial riots in S'pore, Malay-language newspapers and local UMNO politicians ran aggressive campaigns accusing the PAP govt of neglecting, displacing and oppressing S'pore’s Malay minority. Many local Malays feared that SG's rapid urban redevelopment and modernisation would displace their traditional kampongs and push them to the economic margins.
