Just two weeks before their wedding in 2017, Nurashikin Husni Thamrin's fiancé was arrested.

Faredz Ashim was later sentenced to 21 years in prison for a drug-related offence.

Now, almost a decade later, the couple have finally tied the knot at the Tanah Merah Prison School.

Speaking to Mothership, Nurashikin, now 38, said they decided to get married despite Faredz still being incarcerated because their relationship "never stopped" despite the circumstances.

In fact, the couple had six solemnisation applications rejected over four years before finally succeeding on their seventh attempt.

Choosing to stay together

Nurashikin and Faredz first met when they were 16 and 17 through Friendster and Blogspot.

They were originally due to get married in 2017 and had already made all the necessary preparations, including wedding outfits and invitation cards.

However, just two weeks before their wedding, Faredz was arrested and later sentenced to prison.

Despite the setback, the couple chose to remain committed to each other.

"We’ve always maintained open and honest communication through eletters and during visits twice a month, along with open visits every six months to a year," Nurashikin said.

While there are many days that she feels incredibly lonely, she said this is the path they have chosen together.

Beyond maintaining his relationship with Nurashikin, Faredz has also used his time in prison to further his education, she shared.

He completed a diploma at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and received an award for the most outstanding academic performance in 2025.

He is currently pursuing a degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

With remission, his sentence was shortened to 14 years.

Getting married in prison

On Jan. 15, 2026, Nurashikin and Faredz finally became husband and wife.

After years of waiting, setbacks and uncertainty, Nurashikin said being able to call Faredz her husband feels "incredibly emotional and fulfilling".

"It may not have happened the conventional way but to us, it was still a beautiful and meaningful moment that we fought very hard for," she said.

Nurashikin said the solemnisation process was smoother than she had expected.

According to her, the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) guided them through the necessary procedures and worked closely with them throughout the process.

"We were both briefed on what to expect, marriage counselling session, and arrangements for the solemnisation itself," she said.

She also expressed gratitude to the SPS coordinators who supported them along the way.

Hopes for the future

With Faredz expected to be released in a few years' time, Nurashikin said they hope to enjoy the simple things many couples take for granted:

"We just want to live a simple and peaceful life together after so many years apart. To finally experience the little things most people take for granted like having meals together, coming home to each other, travelling, and building our own home and future as husband and wife."

"After everything we’ve been through, just being able to do life side by side will already mean everything to us," she said.

Nurashikin has also shared updates on their story on her TikTok account, with many commenting words of encouragement and congratulations.
