A little history of Taiwan:
Portuguese sailors were the first Europeans to sight the island and named it as Formosa but never invaded it.
Before the Qing arrived, the Dutch established a colony in southern Taiwan, the Spanish occupied the the northern Taiwan but were kicked out by the Dutch.
The Qing came and conquered the island.
Following the Qing's defeat the island was ceded to Japan and it ruled as a colony for 50 years until the end of World War II in 1945.
