Officials have yet to confirm the deaths, however, BBC said.
The BBC added that there are other injuries, with many believed to be tourists. At least nine are from Singapore.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with rescuers still making their way to the hikers trapped on the volcano.
Reuters reported that the active volcano located in North Maluku province erupted at 7:41 am local time on May 8.
According to Indonesia's volcanology agency, the volcano spewed volcanic ash as high as 10km into the sky.

Seek own demise is ok but now forcing a search team to find the body. Really troublesome.Knn 天堂有路你不走, 地狱无门偏要闯 LOL. Really eat too full nothing better to do seeking own demise only.
Yes i agree. They should just let the mountain finish its job and bring back their ashes. Easier to carry down.Seek own demise is ok but now forcing a search team to find the body. Really troublesome.

They found the body
Those sinkies wanted a selfie like this. They took the risk despite warning of big eruption and area 4km around volcano was shut. The scout also at fault for bringing them up there.I am just amazed at the fun you guys here are getting out of the deaths of these young men.
Imagine the months of planning excitement and practice these guys must have been through only to die and be mocked at by fellow Sinkies.
Remember your next visit to the local Hawker Centre might be your last - you may just be struck down by a car.
Then you will also be laughed at by others of similar thinking and ideas and the process life and death goes on.
Are you a Psycho?
People who laugh at or mock the death of others often exhibit traits associated with profound insecurity, a lack of empathy, or a need to assert superiority. Such behavior, while frequently perceived as cruel and inhuman, can stem from varied, complex, and often dysfunctional psychological states. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Here is a breakdown of the character traits and psychological drivers behind this behavior:
1. Psychological Motivators and Traits
- Schadenfreude: This is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction when learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another.
- The "Dark Triad": Higher levels of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy are associated with increased pleasure at the misfortune of others.
- Insecurity and Unhappiness: Individuals who haven't processed their own pain often lash out, mock, and belittle others to manage their own internal unhappiness.
- Dehumanization: By removing the human element from the deceased, the mocker creates a mental shield, reducing the person to a caricature or an enemy, which justifies the mockery.
- Katagelasticism: A psychological condition characterized by ajoy in laughing at others, where the individual actively seeks opportunities to mock. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
2. Contextual and Environmental Factors
- Defense Mechanism (Nervousness): Sometimes laughter is not a sign of malice, but a nervous, involuntary reaction to extreme discomfort, shock, or anxiety. This is often referred to as "gallows humor" when used to cope with high-stress situations.
- Inappropriate Affect: In some cases, this is a neurological issue (e.g., Pseudobulbar Affect) or a symptom of a mental health condition, where the expressed emotion is not appropriate to the context, such as laughing when a loved one dies.
- Social Conditioning: People may mock to fit in with a group that encourages a "us vs. them" mentality. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
3. Ethical and Moral Assessment
While some forms of "gallows humor" can be a legitimate, albeit dark, way to cope with trauma, directly mocking a specific person's death generally indicates a severe lack of empathy or a conscious choice to be cruel.
