Sad news for fish and chips fans: one of the most popular restaurants to serve the dish in Singapore, Smiths Authentic British Fish and Chips, is set to close its Bukit Timah restaurant on 17 May 2026. This comes after 15 years of serving diners in the West.

In an announcement on their Instagram page, Smiths posted its closure message, along with a call for patrons to enjoy the restaurant’s fare at the original Balmoral Plaza outlet while they can. They also stated that they are “relocating”, although there is no confirmation as to where they are reopening or when.

The casual diner is run by its two British founders, who claim Smiths is “the only true authentic British fish and chip shop in Singapore.” If it’s your first visit, try their signature Cod or Haddock & Chips (Standard) ($29.50+). The fish is lightly battered and deep-fried using the founder’s grandfather’s secret recipe from the 1950s. Imported from the UK, the fish is crispy on the outside and meaty within, while the chips are freshly prepared on-site every day.

Besides fish and chips, the eatery serves British classics, including the Steak and Guinness Pie & Chips ($25.80+), which is a hearty pie filled with beef chunks in Guinness-infused gravy. Their English Cottage Pie ($22.50+) is another popular choice, featuring minced beef in a rich gravy, topped with mashed potato and cheese.

One of the tenants that lasted a long time at Balmoral Plaza. And business seemed to be good, restaurant is almost never empty.

Another one bites the dust due to high rent. Welcome to the new normal of a money laundering hub.

Expect another Tiong mala eatery or tuition centre to take up that shop space.

Angmo fish and chips location will be taken over by ah tiong laundry mala very soon. mark my words...

colorectal cancer alert.
Actually, fish is a healthy alternative to red meat which is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. However, deep-frying at high-temperature is unavoidable in preparing fish and chips. This produces chemicals/carcinogens that may trigger cancer cell formation.

so expensive ... only expats and atas bananas then go burn money and makan there .... moi seventh month oso wont go. :whistling:

Deep frying is wok hei. Super high heat enough to set global warming by a huge percentage points.

There's a small stall (the size of a pasar malam stall) in London near Kings Cross station in London that sells superb fish and chips back in the 90s. For just £3.50, you'll get a huge chunk of fried fish, a generous serving of fries and some salad. I wonder if that bloke is still around today. He was in his 50s back then.

These days in London, you're more likely to find shops selling kebab and shawarma.

Food is just a reflection of demographics.

Go to Southall in London and you will think that you are in India or Pakistan. But I must say that's the place to find the best mutton biryani and chapati outside India.
