In an announcement on their Instagram page, Smiths posted its closure message, along with a call for patrons to enjoy the restaurant’s fare at the original Balmoral Plaza outlet while they can. They also stated that they are “relocating”, although there is no confirmation as to where they are reopening or when.

The casual diner is run by its two British founders, who claim Smiths is “the only true authentic British fish and chip shop in Singapore.” If it’s your first visit, try their signature Cod or Haddock & Chips (Standard) ($29.50+). The fish is lightly battered and deep-fried using the founder’s grandfather’s secret recipe from the 1950s. Imported from the UK, the fish is crispy on the outside and meaty within, while the chips are freshly prepared on-site every day.

Besides fish and chips, the eatery serves British classics, including the Steak and Guinness Pie & Chips ($25.80+), which is a hearty pie filled with beef chunks in Guinness-infused gravy. Their English Cottage Pie ($22.50+) is another popular choice, featuring minced beef in a rich gravy, topped with mashed potato and cheese.
