Trump Urges Other Countries to Help Reopen Hormuz as War Enters Third Week
U.S. also tells Americans to leave Iraq following attacks on citizens.
As the war in Iran entered its third week, President Trump said
other countries must help to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and that he hoped they would send warships to aid in the effort.
The U.S. earlier bombed military targets
on Iran's Kharg Island, the country's main oil-export hub, in a bid to pressure Tehran to reopen the strait, which Iran has largely blocked for oil exports
except its own. Trump also said the U.S. Navy would
start escorting oil tankers through the strait “very soon.”
And the U.S.
urged Americans to leave Iraq following “repeated attacks” carried out by Iran-aligned militias on U.S. citizens and targets.
