Should all public schools in Singapore be made fully secular, or should Christian affiliated public schools be required to be more accommodating to non-Christian students?

General

I overheard this conversation at the bus stop today. A kid from my neighbourhood got off the bus and immediately burst into tears as she hugged her grandmother. She told her that her classmates had made fun of her for believing in gods “that are not human.” She said she wanted to convert to Christianity and that she hated her current religion because her classmates told her that “only low-class people” believe in it.

I was honestly shocked to hear this coming from kids, although perhaps I should not be. I attended the same primary school in this neighbourhood 20 years ago, and this was already the culture back then. As a child, I did not know how to articulate my discomfort, so I just shrugged it off. It is disheartening to see that the same environment seems to persist two decades later.

I am not sure what the culture in other Christian schools is like now, but in my school back then, we had compulsory weekly chapel sessions for everyone except Muslim students. All of us had to sing Christian songs, and some teachers would even single out those who did not sing and make them sing in front of them. It was also common for everyone to say “May God bless you” at the end of every lesson. I still remember Christian classmates telling me daily that I was going to hell because I did not believe in their religion. These experiences were the reason I deliberately chose a secular secondary school, and things genuinely improved after that.

Some of you might argue that non-Christians can simply opt for secular schools. However, a quick search shows that there are about 30 out of 147 secondary schools in Singapore, which is roughly 20.4%, are Christian affiliated. When cut off points and location are major factors, it becomes nearly impossible to avoid considering a Christian school during the selection process.

In my view, the culture in my primary school at the time of forcing non-Christian students to participate in Christian activities may have encouraged children to say cruel things and to internalise a sense of religious elitism. The encounter I witnessed today suggests that the effects of such a culture may still be hurting children now.

Should all public schools be made fully secular, or should Christian affiliated public schools be required to be more accommodating to non-Christian students? Non-Christians who attended Christian affiliated schools, please share your experiences.

I won't say which school this is, but it's located in the east.

This is a good question, but I have no time to write a short thesis because I'm going to recce Paradiagm Mall soon.

It's one of my favorite topics, second only to conman pastors.

Ok with me as long as Xtian schools acknowledge long history of colonialism oppression and Mudslime schools never take root here

Ultimately, Civilization began with the building blocks of families, and emerged from the caves and jungles under BARBARIC and DESPOTIC rules, but overcame with just under one single LAW - do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you, as ALL Humans are EQUAL.....king or pauper.,,,

The original author of the post is very subtle, as he/she lists only the Christian faith, but how he/she DID NOT list the Islamic faith, which had been TWISTED and TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT and BRED TERRORISM WORLDWIDE, which often is at least kept sane that abounds in Singapore. One wonders why the omission.....

The insignificant nobody me DO agree on the principles of SECULARISM, but sadly, such principles had only been used and abused by cunning and subtle Radical Islamists whom have NO CONSCIENCE to kill innocents, step over their heads to rule the World, for personal privileges just because of their radicalized faith that is NOT what the good and last Divine sent prophet Muhammad had been sent to teach the barbaric Arabs and failed, and yet deemed more important by and imposed upon with a FAILED Arab Culture unto Polynesians which Malays and Indonesians are, than others of other enthnic groups whom believed in our one TRUE Creator, more so proven as what is happening in EU ruled by libtards TODAY.....

May all Chill, and utter our Sacred National Pledge, sworn DAILY during our formative years at school assembly, at twisted times such as these.....
