Anyone secretly dislike CNY? And why? If you enjoy, also share.

General

I am gonna be the first to raise my hand.

My family like to jam pack all the relatives into one day, making 5-6 visits all over Sg in day one. Then repeat the 2nd day but with lesser places but still end up going home after 11pm.

Honestly, we all know that we will never see or be close to some of these relatives after CNY. And I feel it's no need to visit them as they don't even bother to return the visit. (According to my dad visiting should be 礼尚往来, like if pple come our hse, we die die must visit them too) And my dad had complained about it every year, still visits for show - "see I am at the higher ground, u owe me visits!"

Some attendance to me is just not worth marking.

Another reason is, I am a gig worker. FESTIVE seasons, esp CNY is like the best time to earn extra. Its not like money vs relationship but more like I know from some of their responses that if I ever run into an emergency (choi!!) and needed help, there's low to no chance they will even help. They probably just generous with their naggings and judgements.

Idk, some of you all might be close to your relatives and enjoy CNY but to me it's just a mad rush rat race kinda feel, we usually returned to work much more tired than usual day. Any relationship improvements with relatives? Minimum to none.

I cannot stand envious relatives during such visits. My parents and their siblings all bought landed homes in the 1960s and 70s as they were white collar workers in those days. The 2 siblings who experienced business failures and downgraded their homes to the heartlands resented the rest. This bitterness spread to my cousins (their children). If they are so envious, why continue their visits, but spread snide remarks about the residences and cars belonging to the more successful relatives?

Imagine how every CNY, Christmas, Valentine's Day feel like to single men and women with no close family? I have close friends who are single, an only child and whose parents have passed on. These holidays are just another day to them. In fact, they feel even lonelier.

I feel perfectly fine being alone. It's heavenly peace for me without relatives. So please dont generalized. Later I will go take Grab to Mandai and say hi to my late grandpa.

The impulse to compare seldom arises from innocent curiosity; more often, it is conceived in jealousy. Comparison, when rooted in envy, is not an act of understanding but of quiet aggression — a subtle attempt to reduce what it cannot equal and to tarnish what it secretly covets.

When two wise men converse, their dialogue becomes a meeting of minds — a space where ideas are refined, perspectives widened, and truth approached through mutual illumination. But when two fools engage in discourse, it is not wisdom they seek, but reassurance. Their exchange becomes a mirror of insecurities, where each soothes his own inferiority by magnifying the imagined deficiencies of the other.

大哥, wishing you a happy horse year. 生体健康,心想事成. Best wishes to you and your loved ones.

That is so sad; especially since it is storming now. Bring a huge umbrella to Mandai for your own sake.

I am more worried for my new pair of shoes. Later I tell him he better show some appreciation for the 4 expensive oranges I buy for him, otherwise next year I buy him 4 apples.

CNY itself is getting more and more toxic with folks needing to rent BF or GF just to put on a show.. seriously how much more pathetic can that be.... rent an expensive car or ask showroom must deliver new car before CNY, wear expensive watches and jewelry, all in the hope to impress the relatives.... what a life to live lol.....

Wear your old SAF boots to the cemetery. Why wear new expensive branded shoes?
He last time always say CNY must always everything new. So I bought new shirt, new pants, new underwear, new socks and new shoes lor. Go there troll him and make him happy.
