A WEALTHY American socialite says a diamond ring worth more than $300,000 (right) went missing while she was staying at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore last year.

Now, multi-millionaire Anne Hendricks Bass, 68, has gone to court to force the hotel to make good her loss.

A longtime arts patron with a passion for dance, she was described by The New York Times last month as one of the richest women in the United States after her 1988 divorce from Texas billionaire Sid Bass.

So money can make a whore a wealthy socialite suddenly, just like how money can magically turn a poor sweatshop boy into an educated gentleman in the novel David Copperfield.

Funny how the world really works sometimes.

We have our own Spore David Copperfield, a self made billionaire. From peddlar, Japanese collaborator to THE most powerful man in Spore :D

i guess it was so valuable that it is worth the risk for the hotel staff to nick it.

i think the hotel are covered by putting a safe in the room and that big leather book with all sort of disclaimers.

Doubt the angmo has a chance of getting $300,000 from the hotel. This is Spore where consumer rights are weak.

Hi Singveld, just want to provide some instances where it's a 50/50 happenstance and judgement call for the staff in situations like these:

- Missing a wake-up call and claiming to have missed a multi-million deal or missing a flight
- Consuming almost the entire piece of an expensive cut of beef / bottle of chateau lafite and claiming that the steak / wine is "off" and claiming for a free meal / bill write-off
- Calling an F&B outlet after leaving the outlet saying the meal caused food poisoning and claiming for recompense in med bills etc
- Claims for loss of valuables eg exotic watches, diamond rings, wedding angpows etc
- Suing the hotel due to slip or fall in bath, plus many more instances too many to mention

Some of the above may be true but most of these are chowkah's, that;s why hotels provide room safes and inform guests to declare their valuables and to keep these in the front office safe deposit box. The Inn Keepers Act on limited liability comes in handy and as you stated, the leather book (compendium) contains disclaimers to protect the hotel's interests. Rgds.

Millionaire loses missing diamond case

Judge says she failed to prove ring was taken at Shangri-La Hotel

An American woman who sued the Shangri-La Hotel over the loss of a diamond ring has lost her case in the High Court.

Justice Judith Prakash found that millionaire businesswoman Anne Hendricks Bass, 69, had failed to prove that the ring went missing at the hotel.

The hotel staff who had attended to the guest were also cleared of any liability.

BACKGROUND STORY

Justice Prakash also found other discrepancies and inconsistencies which, taken together, 'do build up a picture of someone who is forgetful and rather careless'. 'There was no convincing evidence that she had brought the ring to Singapore, much less back to the hotel on the evening in question after two days in Singapore, which she spent largely out of the hotel.'

But even if Ms Bass had won the case, she would have been entitled to no more than $500, Justice Prakash said in her judgment released on Tuesday.

Not sure if her lawyer @ Hsien Yang's wife's Law Firm had advised her on this point. Otherwise.....
