Member of Parliament Charlene Chen has urged Tampines residents to clean up after themselves following repeated reports of littering at void decks.



In her Nov 23 Facebook post, Ms Chen shared a photo of a void deck with bags of rubbish lying near a dustbin. A box had been left on top of the bin, while stains were visible on the floor.

In her caption, she reminded residents to keep the area tidy, stressing that "leaving your garbage by the bin, whether bagged or not, is littering".

She also emphasised the importance of personal responsibility, adding that placing rubbish beside the bin is "still considered illegal disposal".

"Our environment reflects who we are as a community," Ms Chen wrote.

Stomp has reached out to Tampines Town Council for more information. A similar case has also been reported at the void deck of Block 130 Bedok Reservoir Road.

In an earlier incident, a man was fined $300 for leaving a cigarette butt on top of a bin instead of disposing of it properly. Under the Environmental Public Health Act, disposing of rubbish in public places is prohibited unless it is placed inside a dustbin.

Netizens report similar sightings​

In the comments, netizens suggested using CCTV footage to catch culprits or investing in larger bins for residents.

Several reported similar incidents of rubbish being left near lifts or around bins, noting that such behaviour attracts rodents and pests. Some described it as "uncivilised behaviour".

"What happened to using rubbish chutes, for these people?" one netizen said. "It's time to identify and shame the culprits to deter recalcitrants."

Another pointed out that bins might be too small for the rubbish bags residents are disposing of, which could explain the mess around the bin.

"At least effort was made to put the bag next to the bin which must be appreciated," one netizen added.

By fining a man $300 for putting out the cigarette on top of the rubbish instead of inside, you are indirectly causing more fires down the road.... beyond stupidity to fine the man....
